DemonsWP (魔, Ma?) are those existences identified as beings of the Laws of Nature (自然の法則, Jizen no Housoku?), that also distort the flow of such laws by the exercise of unnecessary powers.[1] The category covers the types, magical energy, and Magical Beasts.

Overview

Demons

Not the wildly known religious interpretations, in the World of Magecraft, Demons are a category given to those beings or phenomena whose mere presence causes a distortion to the laws of nature that usually results in the need to exterminate them. It is also separately a term often granted to those the Holy Church deems as "Heretics" whose existence runs counter to their religion often leading them to be hunted. Even if a Demon would be relatively harmless a "zealot" would still view them as worthy of eradicating on the grounds they opposed the faith.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

It should be noted that the classification of Demon is not tied to a specific species. Individuals of the same species may or may not be considered Demons depending on how they interact with the Laws of Nature. At the start of the Common Era's infancy, various human based organizations sought out to eliminate any non-human sapient species, many of which could be considered to fall under the "Demon" category, such as the Dead Apostles.

Yet originally, they as a whole were not to be confused with Daemons (悪魔, Akuma?), a more specific variety of existence closer to the beings exorcised by "Exorcists".[9] However, in most modern works that have been localized for English, such as Fate/Grand Order, both categories are being referred to as one and the same, being commonly referred locally as "Demons" as a whole.

Caren describes the difference between Evil Spirits and these Demons that distort the laws of nature, stating that while Evil Spirits are a form of karmic retribution caused by human actions, demons are beings beyond human comprehension caused by an outflow of evil.[10] There are multiple races that fall under the demon category such as necromantic undead corpses, demonic elementals like Tengus,[11] Asuras,[12] artificially created familiars, several Phantasmal Species, and certain Divine Spirits. There is also a small amount of Heroic Spirits as well, such as Jack the Ripper and Koga Saburo.[13][14][15][16] Dead Apostles generally also fall under this category.

Daemons

Daemons fall under the larger category of demons, but the term also refers to imaginary beings born from the thoughts of humans, or that which predates them resulting from the Sixth Imaginary Factor tied to Imaginary Number Space.[17] They are different from normal demons as they are spiritual and mental beings with no corporeal form and must possess a living body in order to interact with the real world.[18]

Daemons are intelligent and often hide their presence within the bodies, usually only allowing the possessed to know of them while they mature and gain individuality. Their possession usually causes the body they are using to alter based on the daemon's true nature and alien common sense which usually results in the death of the vessel.[18] Should the host survive, the daemon will reach full maturity and fully take over the body in a process on the outside appears as if they were possessed by something else. The term daemon is also used to refer to those not considered humans and is mostly attributed to horrors.[18] However, both Demons and Daemons are themselves not considered good or evil, and Daemons themselves are known as entities that can reach understanding with humans.[17]

A mature daemon is almost impossible to separate from the host, and if it was decided to eliminate it, it most often results in the death in both the Daemon and the host. In most cases the process to remove it referred to as a exorcism is usually performed before maturity as Caren Hortensia did.[19] In the Holy Church's records, only Mr. Dawn has ever fully exorcised a mature daemon from a host while saving their life.[20] There are also those who use Daemons in their daily lives like Kaie Karyou who created his own Daemons to act as his limbs which he also grants to others.

True Daemons

True Daemons are far more powerful than other demons and daemons, closer to true horrors that can manifest either by naturally manifesting in their own physical body without needing a host, or if a human who survives possession from a mature daemon gets even further power and evolves into one.[18] Currently not one has manifested in the world ever. Kiara Sessyoin is the only known person to become one,[21][22][23] but after her defeat, since it took place in Imaginary Numbers Space the event was erased by the "Moon Cell" as a "what-if".[24] In the Seraphix Holy Grail War, afterwards the same version of Kiara is instead transformed into a demon when she was summoned into the body of another version of herself from a parallel world.[25][24] Her new state allowed her to overpower the daemon Zepar possessing her original version and claimed it's power as her own.[26] Because she stopped Zepar's maturation she was a demon not a "daemon", and rather than evolving into a "True Daemon" she chose to become Beast III/R which while weaker had more skills to utilize.[27][28] This incident was also transformed into a "what-if".[29]

While all three types of these beings are able to reach understandings with humans, sadly their foreign common sense often leads them to cause havoc around the humans and natural world resulting in them often being hunted down. The Holy Church, an organization of heretic hunters, usually see it as their duty to hunt down these non-human entities before they cause too much destruction.[30][3][4][5][6][7]

Demonic Energy and Traits

The trait "Demonic" and "Demonic Energy" is used to describe powers or traits that bears resemblance and similarities to Demons and refers to the magical energy's that Demons possess to fuel their powers and abilities that go against the natural flow of the world while being born of it. They are usually referred to by humans as malicious and ominous.

There are many Demonic trait Demi-humans such as the Succubi and Incubi, Oni Kind, Werewolfs, fairy Goblins, Mermen, and many others.

Demonic Weapons

Powerful weapons infused with demonic energy or powerful curses that can grant them such as Dáinsleif and Robigus Ironside. Diarmuid Ua Duibhne had four of these demonic weapons; the spears Gáe Dearg, Gáe Buidhe,[31][32][33][34][35] and the swords Beagalltach, and Moralltach.[36] Arondight is a divine holy sword which after Lancelot had stained it with the blood of his comrades had caused its rank to fall and become a demonic sword; making it a rare example of a holy sword turned demonic.[37][38][39][40][41] Among all Demonic Weapons, Gram is hailed as the most powerful demonic sword.[42][43][44]

Balmung, on the other hand, is a different rare example of a unique sword capable of becoming a demonic sword or holy sword depending on who wields it.[45][46][47][48][49] There are Noble Phantasms like Kazikli Bey capable of producing countless demonic spears,[50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57] as well as a demonic sword capable of taking human form like Rengoku.[58][59] Pieces of Demonic Beasts can also be used to create powerful Demonic Weapons, such as Gáe Bolg which possess a curse on par with True Magic.[60][61][62][63][64][65][66]

Caladbolg was originally listed as a demonic sword in Fate/complete material II,[67] but was later changed to a pure magical sword later on.[68][69][70]

There are Dead Apostle Ancestors who also wield demonic swords, such as Enhance and his Demonic Sword Avenger[71][72] and Rizo-Waal Strout and his True Demon Neardark.[73]

Demonic Beasts

There are multiple types of Phantasmal Species (幻想種, Gensō-shu?), the common term used to refer to all non-human creatures that are found in legends and fantasy, but the most common are the ones referred to as Magical Beasts (魔獣, Majū?, alternatively "Demon(ic) Beasts" and "Monstrous Beasts").[74][75][Note 1] This category refers to the most basic of "Phantasmal Species" and are localized mostly as "Demonic Beasts". It is these types which have mostly survived into the Common Era as true deviations in biology.[76]

Since this term refers to many magical beasts as well, just because they bear this title, doesn't mean that they are Demons or possess the Demonic traits.

Demon Hunting

The distortions that both Demonic Energy and Demonic Beasts can cause to their surroundings is rather high and can often lead to various incidents requiring them to be put down by existences such as the Demon Hunters.[1][77] Yet that doesn't mean the Demon in question should be confused with "Daemons".

Demon Hunter Organization

The Demon Hunter Organization (退魔組織, Taima Soshiki?) was formerly the leading "Demon Hunter" group in Japan but disbanded when Mixed-Bloods, the descendants of the union between humans and other races like Oni Kind formed tight relations with the government and had them disbanded. A portion of this group, the Nanaya family chose to continue performing their demon hunter role even after the organization's disbandment feeling they weren't any good for anything else.[78][77]

Holy Church Terminology

The Holy Church is the largest known organization that has strived for the eradication of non-human sapient species and their stance against Dead Apostles and Vampires is especially extreme.[5] Arcueid Brunestud describes the Holy Church's stance on the Dead Apostles as nothing short of an obsession and a fervent sickness to the point she steers clear of them if she can help it.

They view Demons as trials of faith to be overcome by humanity with other members viewing them even as "Heretics" to be purged. Those tasked with eliminating Daemons before they fully manifest, as well as saving those hosts are referred to as "Exorcists", while those tasked with using force to eradicate the physical bodies of any type of Demon regardless of what happens to the host are referred to as "Executors".

The Holy Church refuses to share certain terminologies with the Mage's Association and so refers to the magical energy they use as "Holy Energy", showing their opposing viewpoint of "Demonic Energy". The Holy Church considers that the Demons also represent both the use of magical energy (魔力, Maryoku?), as well as the existence of Magical Beasts (魔獣, Majū?).

Demons are especially weak against the Holy Sacraments, the magecraft of the Holy Church, due to their enforcement of the natural laws of the world forcing them to conform to the world around them. The Baptism Sacrament is especially effective in exorcising Daemons from their hosts, and Black Keys bear an incredibly powerful conceptual effect on there physical forms.

Magecraft

Both the entities known as Demons and Daemons don't possess many examples of their summoning process.

King Solomon

King Solomon established the first and greatest summoning spell, which evoked the 72 Demon Gods, all of them Daemons.[79][80] After his death, Solomon left scriptures that contained arts that let one assume dominion over demons. These scriptures would later be known as LemegetonWP, or Goetia.[81] The Daemon Goetia has an Authority called Nega-Summon (ネガ・サモン, Nega Samon?), which enables him to cancel the summoning of Heroic Spirits from Proper Human History, defeating them before a battle can even begin. They can also summon Heroic Spirits themselves to fight for them irregardless of their own will, and as a shadow of King Solomon their power steams from him, himself

Demonition

Demonition (デモニッション, Demonisshon?) is a first-ranked spiritual evocation power, and a daemon summoning that brings forth imaginative beings known as Daemons, a different category from Demons.[82] The practice of bringing forth beings from the world of fairy tales that have been forgotten by mankind. The ability to embody other's wishes, but not one's own.[82]

Rather than the ability to manifest actual fantasy beings like Ploy Kickshaws,[83] Demonition takes the wishes of others as a model, and then uses the user's dreams as a mold to give them form.[82] The resulting Daemon's powers are born from the warped wishes of the people, but the core of it is born from the users image of it.[82] The magnitude of power each one can possess is dependent on the users magical energy output, and they can reach Divine Beast levels of power.[82]

The only known case of a practitioner is Merem Solomon, who possess Demonitions part of his status as a Planet Terminal (星の端末, Hoshi no Tanmatsu?), and his summons, the Four Great Daemon Beasts (四大魔獣(フォーデーモン・ザ・グレイトビースト), Yondai Majū(Fōdēmon Za Gureitobīsuto)?, "Four Demon the Great Beast"), are each hailed as having the individual power of one of The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors.[82] They can be reformed by Merem even after they die as long as he can reimagine them and their mere presence can weaken the "realism" of the environment, better described as an attack on reality from a fantasy world abandoned by people.[82] It is considered comparable to a Reality Marble in that in an Inner World overwrites reality.[82] They can even survive Merem's death and can continue to exist in the event of it, though they would acquire something considered complete independence if Merem properly named them, as doing so would recognize them as such by the Planet Earth.[82] It is unknown if it is considered Magecraft or a Psychic ability.

Demon Grafting

There are those who use Demons as replacements for their limbs and to invoke great power from them, such as Kaie Karyou, Arika Ishizue, Merem Solomon, and Hassan of the Cursed Arm.

Kiara Sessyoin once had Zepar sealed within one of her pinky fingers.[26]

There are those who would graft parts of demons or seal them within themselves for greater power such as Hassan of the Cursed Arm who grafted and sealed the Demon's Shaytan's right hand onto him so he could utilize its power to function as a Hassan-i-Sabbah. If he were ever to give the Demon full reign it would attack and devour everything in sight as it grew including him.[84] No Name Assassin replicated the feat by grafting a Demon's arm onto her back which she also uses for a variety of techniques. Hassan of the Cursed Arm states he does not know if it was the Demon's other left hand or a different Djinn altogether but nonetheless notes how foolish and reckless it was.[85]

Psychic

A rare genetic condition that can not be inherited by any other method other than birth. It causes ones body to experience and mimic the same ailments that result from a nearby "Daemon Possession" by causing them to bear the spiritual hindrance they are experiencing. It labels them as a type of Spirit Medium and the only method capable of determining a "Daemon Possession" that is usually undetectable making them highly valuable to the Holy Church. Caren Hortensia one of the only two bearers of it states the skill allows her to be effective against Demons in general as well as have a body that is easily susceptible to being possessed by spirits and have their powers flow through her.

Agonist Disorder

Agonist Disorder is a mental illness that causes conditions that mimic "Daemon Possession". Those who possess it have overly stimulated bodies that include the erratic minds and bodily metamorphosis that is commonly seen in the event of "Daemon Possession". It results from an infection that is recorded as one of the most powerful, but it's reproduction is graded quite low on the CDC ranking. The rate of infected has remained steady in the World of DDD for over 20 years mostly being confined in Western Japan.

    The Holy Church [Organisation name]
    The hidden side of the prominent religion whose name means "universal". In Tsukihime, it is referred to merely as "The Church".
    Those who teach the word of God do not acknowledge things which run counter to their doctrine. Though the public face of the Church simply treats these heresies as if they do not exist at all, there were zealots within the organization who felt they should be dealt with more proactively. This enormous division that specializes in the hunting of heresy is known as the Holy Church.
    They lead the devil exterminators called Executors, and exist for just two reasons: to completely expunge all heresy, and to properly manage those mysteries that are beyond human control. Naturally, they are on bad terms with the Association, which seeks to conceal sorcery, and the two have crossed swords time and time again. (At present the two have reached a tenuous agreement, and overt hostilities have, at least for now, come to an end.) However, their real enemies are the monsters known as "bloodsuckers". For the sake of combatting this greater threat, they have even been known to cooperate with the Association on occasion.
    Also, there are various jurisdictions within the Church as well. The Burial Agency, which Ciel belongs to, are like the elite commandos of heresy hunting.
    Arcueid, Roa, and Ciel all have deep ties to the Church, but since Tsukihime is set in the Far East outside of the Church's influence, it serves as little more than a backdrop to the story's events.

    The other side of an ubiquitous major religion.
    They preached the Lord's teachings, and did not tolerate anything that violated their dogma.
    On the surface, they assumed "heresies" did not exist, but there were zealots amongst them who wished to ostracize the heretics.
    Thus the "Heretic Hunters" were born and specialized, becoming an enormous department within the Holy Church.
    They were the Executors. Their missions included Demon-slaying, elimination of heretics, and proper regulation of Mysteries that fell into the hands of the populace.
    Of course, the Holy Church's relationship with the Mages' Association, whose mission was to conceal magecraft, was very poor. The two groups had crossed blades numerous times to date. (Currently there is a truce, providing a temporary respite.)
    Against their greatest foe, the monsters known as vampires (READ: Blood Suckers), the Mages' Association occasionally provided assistance.
    Kotomine was responsible for the control and collection of relics. He had the role of an Executor of the Assembly of the Eighth Sacrament.
    The arms forces of the Holy Church consisted of the excellent fighters known as Executors, the Knights that each church held reserve, and the monsters known as the Burial Agency hidden within the headquarter of the Holy Church.
    The Holy Church was the largest organization in the world of Fate. For those who fell outside of humanity, the Holy Church was the greatest enemy.

    Even in the world of Extra, the concept of Demons (悪魔の概念, akuma no gainen?) is by humanity treated as the greatest of obstacles; so as God is to omniscience and omnipotence (全知全能, zenchi zenou?), so as demons as an existence are to mortal levels of awareness and impotence (人知無能, Jinchi Munou?, lit.     In general, demons are existences that take possession, utilizing the corpus of a human to incarnate (受肉, juniku) and take action, but in the event that the psyche (精神, seishin?) of the human host (苗床になる人間, naedoko ni naru ningen?, lit. "the human that becomes a seed-bed") cannot withstand the strain, it is commonplace for self-annihilation (自壊, jikai?) of the host to occur, dispersing the essence of the demon into the vicinity.

    There exist also humans who by way of their own acts (業, ?, lit. "sins; worldly preoccupations / fixations / absorptions; karma") are subsumed unto the category of Demons as a result of losing their humanity; but these creatures that are said to have become Fiends (魔人, Majin?) cannot be considered True Demons.

    In the world of Extra -- whether by way of Demonic possession, or in the circumstance that one's own actions bring about a transformation -- the phenomenon whereby a True Demon is birthed unto the world has, as of present day in 2030, not been brought successful fruition even once.

    Though the classifications of "Demons" and "Fiends" do exist, their manner of existence is in essence indistinguishable from that of a higher-order lifeform (高次元生命体, kou-jigen seimeitai?, lit. "higher-dimension lifeform") that inhabits a different sphere of civilization (異なる文明圏, koto-naru bunmei-ken?) upon a different planet (異なる惑星, koto-naru wakusei?).

    In sum, said existences can, per the recognition of the Universe of Awareness (認識宇宙, ninshiki-uchuu?, lit. "the universe derived of observation / perception"), no longer be discerned as "human."

    Their existences would approximate to that of the cosmic horrors (邪神, jashin?, lit. "evil god") of a certain fictitious Mythos popular in the 20th century.

    A masked, Assassin-class Heroic Spirit who can control snakes. He has a giant frame and spindly arms and legs. He often appears unexpectedly and even has a spell that can hold humans in thrall. Though his Master's name was revealed to be Dorothea Coyett, and their base was determined to be in Yokosuka, his true identity remains unknown.

    Venomous Snake
    Assassin, along with his Master Dorothea, engaged in battle with Miyamoto Iori and Saber at Yokosuka. Though he fought using several snakes of varying sizes, when Rider suddenly appeared and stole control of Great Orochi from him, Assassin and Dorothea readily fell back. As the two retreated, Assassin transformed his arm into a snake to leave Iori with a venomous bite as a parting gift.

    A Test
    Though hit with powerful magecraft that attempted to control him, Assassin is a Heroic Spirit associated with an ancient god. No simple spell would have been enough to control him. The reason he allowed himself to be controlled, then, was perhaps to test the caliber of his Master, Dorothea. Whatever the case, Assassin disappeared from view with a smile on his face.

    True Form
    Assassin transformed into a giant snake through his Noble Phantasm, Incarnation: Omen of the Great God Ibuki. Running on pure instinct, he attempted to devour the nearby residents, but Dorothea somehow managed to grab his attention. Assassin took the bait and gave chase.
    Knowing that Assassin could potentially run rampant and damage the city when using his Noble Phantasm, Dorothea had devised a countermeasure.     Even in the world of Extra, the concept of Demons (悪魔の概念, akuma no gainen?) is by humanity treated as the greatest of obstacles; so as God is to omniscience and omnipotence (全知全能, zenchi zenou?), so as demons as an existence are to mortal levels of awareness and impotence (人知無能, Jinchi Munou?, lit. "human intellect and impotence").

    They are as an abyss (淵, fuchi?) that lies within arm's reach, yet decisively beyond comprehension.

    Distinct from those demons from Stay Night, which exist only as imitations, the real thing -- Enfleshed Demons (受肉した悪魔, juniku-shita akuma?, lit. "Incarnated Demon") are that with which humans are incapable of competing 太刀打ちできない (tachi-uchi-dekinai, lit. "incapable of crossing swords"?).

    He is weak to blood and violence, and even to horror movies. Because he will freeze out of panic the moment he witnesses the scene of a heretic's massacre, the other Executors fear him as "the far and away #1 man you don't want to go on a mission with."

    This is the anti-planetary Noble Phantasm Kiara gains after her reincarnation.
    Angra Mainyu is the most self-serving heinous Noble Phantasm of them all where Kiara uses the world to masturbate.
    Kiara offers her body in a sexual manner to all living things on Earth, including humans, animals, and plants. By completely accepting all people as is she gains the greatest possible mastery over their senses and carnality.
    This Noble Phantasm is derided for being demonic and it’s similar to the living sacrifices used for certain artificial magic ceremonies used the past in order to prove the evil of humans.
    It is a vortex of pleasure that melts all sentient beings, and digests their “life” in an instant. While in reality it all happens in an instant, but it feels like an eternity of pleasure.
    Regardless of how different the structure of a beings intelligence may be, this vortex affects all without exception. It is not a Noble Phantasm that is limited to affect only those on Earth.
    The damage increases if certain conditions are met.
    If the target is of the opposite sex, the damage increases.
    The more intelligent a being is, the more damage it does.
    As far as the setting and lore are concerned, the Servant who would be hit with the least damage would be Archer, and Gilgamesh would be damaged the most.
    The reason why this attack’s power, visuals, and scale are so huge is because reincarnated Kiara is a being similar to Saver.
    People who devote their life to bringing salvation to Sattvas (living things) are referred to as Bodhisattvas. People who have attained moksha (libertation/release) and become Buddhas are also Bodhisattvas. A Bodhisattva is a god of universe scale and power, and can easily manage things on the scale of the Solar System.
    Buddhism has a sense of scale of the universe that stands out from that of other religions. There are concepts like Nayuta (1060) and “The Infinitely Vast Number” (1068) which were created to represent the scale and size of a Buddha.
    The entire universe is the domain of a Buddha. In Buddhism the universe in considered to be made up of three billion solar systems (a great trichiliocosm). A galaxy comprises of 3000 solar systems (a small trichiliocosm), and 1000 small trichiliocosms make up a trichiliocosm.
    This actually aligns with the real scale of galaxies, galaxy clusters, and super clusters.
    India had this stuff figured out over 2000 years ago? Holy crap!
    In the initial design phase of the game I submitted some paperwork describing this Noble Phantasm. I thought there would be no way that this gets by CERO untouched, but surprisingly enough it did.

    仏教において宇宙は仏の国であり、その広さも三千大千世界と呼ばれる。

    This is this Servant's Noble Phantasm and is synonymous with the Servant himself, who in his previous life was known as Kazikli Voyvoda, or the Impaler Prince. The tortures and horrors released by the multitude of spears that his Noble Phantasm summons inflicts damage equivalent to the immorality and depravity found in the soul of the targeted opponent and can be seen as a form of divine punishment.

    During the time of his reign as monarch of Wallachia, Vlad instituted a number of somewhat oppressive and punitive policies aimed at the lower levels of the nobility whom Vlad felt had seriously undermined and destabilized his country with their excessive corruption and political maneuverings. In addition to laws designed to curtail their excesses, he also carried out an unprecedented number of impalings amongst the noble classes.

    While many believed he was simply trying to reduce the number of rivals and opponents to his rule, Vlad was shockingly ruthless in his approach to justice, targeting commoners and the upper-class with equal viciousness. His kingdom became a land of horrors, culminating with the 1459 impaling of an emissary from the Ottoman Empire, who survived on the stake for several days before finally succumbing.

    A being some claims to be of the undead, and painted as evil and ungodly by those whole hold to a religious view of the world. In addition to the need to feed on the blood of humans, creatures such as this also are seemly immortal and are able to control lesser demons.

    01 - Character Background
    Considered a heroic figure in Romanian history, he was seen as a noble warrior who rebuilt and maintained the kingdom of Wallachia as well as the shield of Christendom against the threat of the Ottoman Empire.

    The name Dracula was the most common appellate used when referring to Vlad III during his reign as King of Wallachia. Originally a duke appointed to his office under the auspices of the Eastern Roman Empire, he adopted many of the customs of that country's court, including signing all documents in the early Roman style. The name itself comes from his father's (Vlad II) enrollment into the Order of the Dragon, a monarchial chivalric order founded by Sigismund of Hungary, who later ascended to the throne of the Holy Roman Empire. His father took the surname Dracul and Vlad III appended the "a", signifying that he was "the son of Dracul."

    The Order of the Dragon's primary purpose was to defend the Christian world from the increasing influence and might of the Islamic Ottoman Empire, a calling that Vlad III enthusiastically embraced. It is believed by some that he took the name Dracula not only in honor of his father, bus as also as an announcement of his intentions of safeguarding all of Christendom against the Turks as the "Son of the Dragon."

    In order to protect Wallachia from what he considered the ravaging Turkish hordes, he instituted a series of conscriptions and laws that almost destroyed the noble class and stability of his realm, as well as resorted to measures considered to be beyond monstrous even by the somewhat barbaric standards of the time. His cruelty and savagery was such that at one point he had over 20,000 captured enemy soldiers impaled in an effort to intimidate his foe. In the end he was betrayed by the nobles he had turned his back on and was assassinated at the age of 46 years old.

    02 - "Dracula"
    Known as one of the greatest monsters of modern history, the inevitable distortions and exaggerations of scholars throughout the centuries cannot wholly cover the well-documented horrors and atrocities committed by his direct commands. Although he is seen as a hero and savior by some, the lengths he went to preserve the independence of Wallachia and to repel the Turk will forever paint him as an incarnation of satanic evil on Earth.

    1462 AD
    This was the year in which he first used impaling not only as punishment, but also as a form of psychological warfare in order to slow down the advances of the Turkish invasion into the western kingdoms. With a force of just 10,000 troops, Vlad III made extensive use of what are now known as guerilla and scorched-earth tactics to harass and weaken the enemy forces, which at one points consisted of over 150,000 soldiers. At one point, he drove his forces into Carpathian Mountains after annihilating the Turkish forces surrounding the city of Bucharest.

    The scene that the main Turkish force encountered when they finally arrived to help the city was one of nightmares. Surrounding the entire city was a vast forest comprised entirely of impaled soldiers, some 20,000 in total. It is said that the lines of impaled Turks stretched for kilometers in every direction. The sight of their comrade's bodies impaled on stakes in combination with the overpowering stench of decay broke the morale and spirit of the Turkish army. Even Mehmed II , son of the Turkish Sultan and known as the conqueror, was shaken and ordered his forces to withdraw, saying the following:

    "I fear no man alive, but even I cannot hope to fight the devil."

    In the end, Vlad III rationalized his brutality and his lack of remorse gave him a battle vision far superior to those he faced. However, his actions made him a pariah amongst even his supporters and his life came to a tragic end due to betrayal.

    On an unrelated note, many military historians theorize that Vlad's actions against the Turks are the first time that guerilla warfare tactics made their appearance and that they were the reason for his many successes against a demonstratively superior force. If one is to have so much success defending something only to be repaid with treason and assassination, isn't it reasonable to assume that one would go insane from rage and disappointment?

    これは彼の父、ヴラド二世が神聖ローマ皇帝ジギスムントの創設したドラゴン騎士団(メンバーは24人)の一員であり、自らをドラクル(竜公)と名乗っていたことに由来する。
    つまり、ドラクルの子であるため、子を意味するaの発音を末尾につけた事からドラキュラになったのである。

    ちなみにドラゴン騎士団の目的は、イスラム勢力からキリスト教世界を防衛することであった。
    ヴラド三世がドラキュラを名乗ったのは、キリスト教世界を守護する父の意志を継ぐ意思表示だった可能性もある。

    トルコ軍からワラキアを守り抜くため、国土を荒廃させた貴族たちを粛正し、敵対するトルコ軍の兵士2万を串刺し刑にしたが、厳罰主義を貫いた為、貴族たちに背かれた。
    その最期は、配下であるワラキア貴族たちによる暗殺である。
    享年46歳。

    02 - 『ドラキュラ』
    今や世界でもっとも有名な怪物の一人になってしまった人物。
    創作が現実をねじまげた、最大のサンプルケースと言えるだろう。
    ……が、その全てを創作者の傲慢である、と断言できないのも事実である。
    ヴラド三世はワラキア独立を守るために手段を選ばず、トルコ側から悪魔の如く嫌われたからだ。

    1462年。
    彼の最大の串刺しとして知られるのが、トルコ侵略に対する防衛戦争である。
    彼は怒涛のごとき15万のトルコ軍に1万の軍隊で立ち向かう為、焦土戦術をゲリラ戦を指示。
    民衆をカルパチア山脈に逃がし、首都までも空にした上でトルコ軍を迎え撃った。
    その時に首都ブカレストの周囲にあったのが、のべ2万人を超えるトルコ兵たちの串刺しされた姿だった。

    ブカレストの城塞周囲に屹立する、無数の串刺し死体の群れ。
    その異様と異臭に、勇猛を持ってなるトルコ兵たちは完全に士気をくじかれた。
    “征服者”と呼ばれた剛勇・メフメト二世でさえ、

    「私はどんな人間も恐ろしくないが、悪魔だけは別だ」

    と残し、軍を引き上げたという。
    この時の串刺しの野原は長さにして3キロ、幅にして1キロ。
    オスマン・トルコ帝国は後年のワラキア占領後も、このトラウマから自治は認め続けたとされる。

    人間以上の視野の広さを持つ武人。
    だが理解者には恵まれず、裏切りによる失望の中で人生を終えた。
    それがヴラド三世の真実である。

    また、余談ではあるが、キリスト教世界で初めてゲリラ戦術(パルチザン)を組織したとの意見もある。
    これほどの才能を持ちながら酬われなかったのなら、確かに、正気を失うのも無理からぬ事か。

    This is a Noble Phantasm derived from Vlad III’s posthumous title – Vlad the Impaler.
    It’s a magic torture castle that pierces victims with magic lances which curse and deal heavy damage.
    The pain caused by it increases depending on the immoral and deprave sins they have committed; it’s truly an attack of great justice.
    In the game, Mandragoras, screaming as though they were dying, burst out from under the feet of enemies and pierce them with countless lances that cause huge damage.
    Furthermore, the attacks apply the negative status effect “curse.”
    The attack affects all enemy units, so it’s true value is only displayed in one vs. many situations rather than one-on-one.
    Also, as a hidden component, Kazikli Bey’s damage is increased when used on people who qualify as “enforcement targets.”
    If the enemy has committed the crimes of escape from prison, immorality, or violence, Kazikli Bey’s destructive power increases. There is no extra damage when used against the protagonist because they have no criminal record.


    At the time Vlad III was alive, punishing commoners with impalement wasn’t unusual in the Balkan Peninsula and Northern Mediterranean Sea areas.
    But then, after Vlad III took up the role as Wallachia’s lord and leader for the second time, he became fed up with the extreme corruption and depravity of the nobles in his country.
    He decided that the decline of Wallachia was due to these nobles, and took decisive action against unprecedented numbers of them. His primary method of enforcement and punishment was impalement.
    In Wallachia, where nobles and commoners had previously been subject to very different treatment and rules, it’s presumed that Vlad’s actions were extremely shocking.
    There was surely no one in the land who did not feel the severity and horror of Lord Vlad’s actions.
    After routing the nobles, impalement became Vlad’s favorite method of punishment, and in 1459 he even went so far as to impale the emissary of the Ottoman Empire (Turkish Empire) alive, among other deeds.

When this happens, nothing can be done, and the enemy will end up suffering in excruciating pain until they die.
    …Well, the fact that there was an unbelievable Servant who would circulate fire through his own body in order to incinerate the stakes within him was probably a miscalculation for Vlad.

    In Celtic mythology, it is the legendary demonic spear possessed by the demigod Cú Chulainn. Because of its huge size for a throwing weapon, nobody except Cú Chulainn was powerful enough to wield it. In some stories, the spear is thrown from the fork of the toes in order to increase its power. The name of this throwing technique is also “Gáe Bolg”.
    It is said that it would scatter into countless arrowheads when thrown, wiping out multiple opponents in a single throw. The name Gáe Bolg derives from “ga bool’ga” (serrated throwing weapon), which evokes images of lightning.

    Once Ireland was called Erin, which means "green" in Gaelic. In this land named after its abundant greenery, there was a boy with great talent. His name was Sétanta. It is said that his father was the sun god Lugh and his mother was royalty. One day, he accidentally killed the guard dog protecting the house of master blacksmith Culann. Sétanta alone strangled to death "Culann's savage dog" that was well-known to have the strength of ten men. In order to compensate for this deed, for a while he himself would carry out the duties of a guard dog. Consequently, all began to call the boy "Culann's savage dog" i.e. Cú Chulainn.

    In his final battle Cú Chulainn battled furiously and died pierced by his own magical spear. A crow landed on the shoulder of his standing corpse in his death. It is said that it was the incarnation of the witch Morrigan who continued to give him her unrequited love.

    Tactics
    Naturally by his own beliefs, he prefers to fight with his full power as a warrior. However, due to the Command Spell of his Master Kotomine "Fight with everyone, then withdraw," he was commanded to involuntarily perform reconnaissance missions. Even in the middle of his first battle with EMIYA, he showed decisive action by leaving the battle to kill Emiya Shirou whom he recognized to have witnessed it. The withdrawal was also very skilled, giving the appearance of realizing that the situation was unfavorable. As long as the attack is a thrown type, he can avoid even Noble Phantasms, but he can't gain the effects of this protection with respect to wide range attack types where the attack range of the weapon explodes on impact, or a direct attack by a weapon that has simply long reach.

    The circumstances behind Cú Chulainn's great divinity is his father's existence. His father was Lugh, the god who governed over the sun, a member of the Danann divine family in Celtic Mythology. As a demigod whose father was an almighty god who possessed every skill such as knowledge, techniques and magic, and whose mother was Deichtine, younger sister of King Conchobar, he exhibited superior talent from birth. Boasting supernatural ability that separated him from ordinary people from a young age, in his training in the Land of Shadows, he received the original runes and terrible magic spear Gaé Bolg from Scáthach. Truly, he was a man predestined to become a hero. In Ireland, poetry and statues praising Cú Chulainn still remain to this day.

    While this is a technique employing Gáe Bolg as a melee attack, it is originally a magic spear for throwing. With a technique that reverses the meaning of "cause and effect" in the order of things, the "result" that "the heart of the opponent has been pierced" is created earlier than the moment it is thrust. Accordingly, the "cause" that "the lance has pierced through the heart" is generated from it later. Without a great deal of luck (like Artoria), it can be said that this is a technique that determines "if it is released, the opponent is dead." However, against Servants like Heracles who can move even when their heart is destroyed, there is a small disadvantage. Compared to the Spear of Striking Death Flight, both the range of effectiveness and the destructive power are weakened. However, it is worth mentioning that "the magical energy cost is low." For having such a strong effect as "almost certainly will destroy the enemy's heart," without the need of a terrible amount of magical power, it becomes an excellent Noble Phantasm of extraordinary usability.

    The largest and most powerful attack delivered using Gae Bolg. The “attack that unleashes countless darts at the enemy” which legends speak of is Gae Bolg – Striking Death Flight. After accelerating through an approach run, Cú Chulainn takes to the skies and activates Striking Death Flight by hurling it towards the ground with all his might.
    Different from Gae Bolg – Piercing Death Thorn, Striking Death Flight does not carry the property or concept of “always pierces the opponent’s heart”, but compared to Piercing Death Thorn, both power and area of effect are increased (intense consumption of Magic Energy). It is a technique that attacks the enemies together with the surrounding area, in a carpet bombing fashion. Even resilient bulwark or agile body are not immune to the power of Striking Death Flight; Gae Bolg will send the enemy horde flying. In legend, the demonic spear is said to split into 30 and pour down over the enemy, but it seems the number has increased after Cú Chulainn became a Heroic Spirit. During the battle with Emiya, Emiya spoke of Striking Death Flight “exceeding the original, Gungnir – Declaration of the Great God”.

    >The catalyst for Lancer's birth

    Nasu: As with Berserker, Lancer's concept did not change much from old "Fate".

    Takeuchi: I feel like Lancer was more tragic in old "Fate"... though I suppose he was quite tragic in this one as well.

    Nasu: In old "Fate", Lancer had a Master who was more like Rin, so his role as the rival was a bit easier to grasp.

    Takeuchi: Old "Fate" didn't have a character like Archer (Emiya), so Lancer filled the rival role instead. In old "Fate", Lancer was basically used as a gopher by a high-maintenance girl. I guess you could say he's had bad luck with women since those days.

    Nasu: True enough.

    Takeuchi: Who was Cu Chulainn's Master?

    Nasu: He trained under Scathach, known for being as cool-headed and beautiful as she was aloof. She definitely didn't coddle him. By persistently challenging her to a fight, Cu Chulainn earned his place as her apprentice and was granted the use of Gae Bolg.

    Takeuchi: I believe his Master in old "Fate" was based on Scathach. She left an impression on me because I felt bad for Cu Chulainn finding himself under the influence of another woman like that, even after death.

    >Regarding Lancer's character design

    Takeuchi: As Nasu mentioned earlier, Lancer's design concept hasn't changed much since the early days. His face in particular remains quite familiar.

    Nasu: Especially his hairstyle, slicked back bangs hanging loose, and a ponytail.

    Takeuchi: When I was designing Lancer's outfit, I asked Nasu about his concept and thought a bodysuit would go well with his character.

    Nasu: Yeah, I think I asked for a bodysuit reminiscent of "Vampire Hunter D".

    Takeuchi: I took that direction and ran with it. The final design does have a touch of sci-fi flavour to it, but my initial drafts were even more sci-fi.

    Nasu: We had to tone down that sci-fi aspect to make him fit in better with the other characters. We couldn't have "Space Lancer 2004" running around.(laughs) Now that I think about it, Lancer's not the only blue character.

    Takeuchi: Yeah, Saber's blue too... Why did we make Lancer blue, then?

    Nasu: Blue's really the only colour that suits his concept, don't you think?

    Takeuchi: Come to think about it, I've never seen a non-blue variation of Lancer. I guess it was also because he was clearly positioned as Archer's rival.

    Nasu: The ancient rivalry between red and blue... As a side note, Gae Bolg was Lancer's Noble Phantasm in old "Fate" as well. When I was coming up with the abilities for it, I thought the notion of a battle between the "rules" laid out by Noble Phantasms would be a new and fun idea.

    Takeuchi: Though it didn't work on Saber. (laughs)

    Nasu: Haha, yeah. The sure-kill spear that didn't kill. That's the good old Gae Bolg for you. But that was the stage at which I figured out the true direction of "Fate". It wouldn't be about values and numbers, but a battle between concepts.

    >The Noble Phantasm Gae Bolg

    Nasu: A weapon that strikes with guaranteed fatal blows sounds like a total cheat, but I guess it doesn't sound as bad now since we were just talking about Berserker earlier. (laughs)

    Takeuchi: Are there any limitations to the use of Gae Bolg, or is the True Name the only requirement?

    Nasu: The Noble Phantasm will activate if Lancer is within spear-striking distance of his opponent. If his opponent has a high luck stat, the attack can still miss, though that is quite rare.

    Takeuchi: So luck is the only way to dodge it?

    Nasu: Yeah, I'd say so. Even if your agility was EX level, it wouldn't matter. The only reason why Saber survived Gae Bolg's strike was because her luck stat was high.

    Takeuchi: I guess her precog ability helped too.

    Nasu: I like to call it intuition. Add to that her B-level luck, and she was able to avoid fatal injury even though she still couldn't dodge the attack completely.

    Takeuchi: Do you think it would hit Archer?

    Nasu: Without a doubt. Archer knows that too, which is why he stays as far away from Lancer as possible. If Lancer ever got that look in his eyes and took the stance, Archer would backpedal like his life depended on it, because it would.

    Takeuchi: I see... well, they do say discretion is the better part of valor. What about throwing Gae Bolg?

    Nasu: Gae Bolg: Soaring Spear that Strikes with Death is purely destructive power.

    Takeuchi: I guess it would be too much if Gae Bolg could strike the target's heart without fail when thrown as well.

    Nasu: That would be an ability worthy of Lugh, Lancer's father... it might even be more powerful that Fragarach.

    Takeuchi: Eternal Force Blizzard! Instant death. Something like that, right?

    Nasu: Sounds about right. The legendary battles of ancient mythology were quite literally played out in god mode, after all.

    >The message Lancer carries as a character

    Nasu: I imagine most of us want to feel like we've lived a good life. That thought was at the forefront of my mind when I was writing for Lancer. In "hollow" he has a line where he questions the necessity of hating one's enemy. I feel like that sentiment sums up Lancer's personality. I guess you could say it's my version of the manga "Haguregumo", just not as... unique. (laughs)

    Takeuchi: Or even Josuke Higashikata.

    Nasu: I don't know... Josuke's a bit silly.

    Takeuchi: What about Juuza of the Clouds, then?

    Nasu: Juuza is supposed to be like the clouds, but in reality he's totally paralyzed. He's just forever dragging his feelings for Yuria around.

    Takeuchi: His death was admirable, though.

    Nasu: To elaborate further on Lancer, he's always been portrayed as a slender warrior. The design concept for him was a panther, with tight groupings of solid muscles.

    Takeuchi: I always imagined Lancer with softer eyes, which may be why I always drew him with slightly heavy eyes that were angled downward. But then I saw that other artists always drew Lancer with extremely sharp eyes. I would never have realised my mistake if I hadn't noticed that.

    Nasu: ...You're terrible (laughs)

    Takeuchi: Yeah, I angled Lancer's eyes down for "Zero" before I checked the main game and remembered that his eyes were in fact angled skyward.

    Nasu: Lancer's a truly hopeless character, isn't he? I mean, he died in an accident in Sakura's route... (laughs)

    Takeuchi: How did he meet his end in Saber's route?

    Nasu: He was defeated by Gil in the church basement. We didn't elaborate on this in the game, but Lancer was actually battling against Gil for half a day before he lost, so I think it's safe to say that Gil sustained some serious injuries in that encounter.

    Takeuchi: I doubt many of the people who played the game spent much time thinking about that particular fight.

    Nasu: Cu Chulainn is probably one of the top two greatest heroes in Irish Mythology. This may seem contrary to what I was saying about Berserker, but Lancer's agility and combat experience are enough to keep him alive even without some overwhelming super ability. Lancer is definitely a character based on the survivor archetype.

    Takeuchi: Regardless of concept, as far as the story is concerned, Lancer was basically the bait in a giant dog fighting ring. Even the thrown Bolg was just there to make Aegis seem more impressive.

    Nasu: Hey! Are you dissing Lancer!?

    Takeuchi: I just think he was a very unfortunate character, all things considered. But I guess that's why the impression he left on me was something akin to clouds.

    武内:“ゲイ・ボルク”の使用に制限ってある?真名さえ開示すればかならず当たるんだっけ?

    奈須:槍が届く距離の戦闘でタイミングさえ合ってれば、宝具(ゲイ・ボルク)は必ず発動する。でも相手の幸運の数値が高かったら、まれに外れる。

    武内:ラックでしか回避できない?

    奈須:あれはラックでしか避けられません。たとえ敏捷度がEXだったとしても無理です。“ゲイ・ボルク”の一撃に対してセイバーがギリギリで致命傷を避けられたのは、彼女の幸運が高かったからです。

    武内:セイバーには先読みの能力もあるか。

    Gae Bolg.
    The cursed spear that always pierced the opponent's heart after being thrust.
    Reverse causality --- a technique which broke the rules by launching the spear after it was already established that the heart was pierced.
    Since the target was already hit by the spear, the opponent would always be hit regardless what kind of evasive maneuvers he took.
    In order to evade Gae Bolg, one would require Noble Phantasms that automatically resurrected the target after death like that of Berserker's, or a high degree of Luck sufficient to negate the curse of the spear.
    To put it into game terms, it would be an insane Noble Phantasm with a base damage plus an additional component that scaled with the target's HP.
    For example, if Saber's HP was 100, then Gae Bolg's damage would be (Spear Damage + 100). She would absolutely be dead if it hit.
    It was also an efficient Noble Phantasm with mana consumption only in the double digits.
    Anti-Unit Noble Phantasms probably did not get anymore economical than this.
    By the way, Piercing Death Thorn was a technique Lancer developed himself.
    Originally Gae Bolg was a thrown Noble Phantasm. It was an Anti-Army Noble Phantasm rather than Anti-Unit.

    ゲーム的に言うなら、ダメージ補正が、狙った相手のHP分プラスされる、というトンデモ宝具。
    仮にセイパーのHPが100だとしたら、ゲイ・ボルクのダメージは(槍のダメージ)+(100)になるのである1そりゃ絶対死ぬわ。
    このお手軽さで消費魔力は二桁程度。
    対人においてこれほど無駄のない武装はあるまい。
    余談ではあるが、このゲイ・ボルクはランサーが自己涜にアレンジしたもの。
    本来のゲイ・ポルクは投郷宝具で、対人ではなく対軍宝具である。

    Caladbolg is the demonic sword wielded by the Irish hero Fergus mac Róich in Celtic mythology. The version that Archer projects has been altered to improve its function as an arrow.
    In the legends, Fergus mac Róich was the former king of Ulster and foster-father of the hero Cú Chulainn. However, he was tricked out of his kingship, and later allied with Connacht, an enemy of Ulster. During the decisive battle between Connacht and Ulster, Fergus was able to corner the enemy king who had betrayed him, but was prevented from killing him. It is said that he redirected his rage at this turn of events upon three hills, using Caladbolg to blast their tops clean off.
    Cú Chulainn is affected by a geis that makes it his duty to be defeated once by the sword so long as the wielder is Ulster-born. For that reason, it could be said to be his natural enemy.
    Also, there is a theory that the Caladbolg from Celtic mythology is the same sword as the Caledfwlch from Welsh mythology, making it a prototype of Excalibur.

    Gawain's Anti-Army Noble Phantasm. A Pseudo-Sun is contained in the hilt.
    A holy sword in King Arthur's legends, it is the sister sword to Excalibur. If Excalibur is a sword that destroys castles, this sword destroys the enemy army.
    If King Arthur's holy sword collects the light of the stars, Sir Gawain's holy sword represents the rays of heat from the sun.
    Unlike Excalibur's centralized attack, Galatine is a broad wave, radiation-type attack that completely annihilates the enemy army. Like Excalibur, the original owner is a Maiden of the Lake. Hidden in Excalibur's shadow, it's a holy sword rarely mentioned in the legends.
    In the remaining legends, it is similar to its owner, Gawain, and shows its greatest power at noon, the unsurpassed shaprness of the edge is said to become visible. That sharpness sliced clean through the shield and chainmail of the enemy, the Saracen soldier Priamus.
    As Arthur has the providence of the night (Alto, Artemis, the pedigree of the goddess of the moon), Gawain is the knight who receives the blessing of the sun.
    That special characteristic is reflected in the Noble Phantasm, which is like the rays of heat from the sun. Caladbolg is the prototype of Galatine, like a long rainbow, and cleanly sliced off the top of a hill with its full power.
    It was a sword of light that stretched from the magic sword like a rainbow. Galatine is similar; with a motion like drawing a sword, and the pseudo sun inside and the magical energy put into it, the attack extends as far as it is possible to visualize the blade of the sword.
    That is to say...about 13 kilometers or so.

    One of the 27 Dead Apostle Ancestors. The Knight of Vengeance.
    A bloodsucker who only just became an Ancestor, he is known derisively as the "Single-edged Enhance Sword".
    Although hostility between Dead Apostles is nothing strange, that only refers to power squabbles within a group. In other words, while Dead Apostles will fight for the right to become their own Ancestor's successor, there is no conflict between the separate Ancestors' factions. However, Enhance is an exception to the rule, and is hunting the other members of the 27 Ancestors themselves.
    Even though he's a vampire, he is incomplete, and lacks the superhuman innate abilities possessed by the other Ancestors. On the other hand, his force of will and ability to take action is foremost among the Dead Apostles.
    By nature, the immortal Dead Apostles are tranquil beings, but as Enhance is still almost human his vindictiveness knows no bounds.
    He fights using the demonic sword Avenger, which he inherited (stole) from the Apostle he replaced, and a gun that was manufactured by the Church. Because the gun is an artifact of the Church, it corrodes his left arm each time he uses it.
    If you're wondering what an entry like this is doing in this encyclopedia, it's because he got name-dropped in one of the routes, during a conversation between Arcueid and Ciel.
    If there's ever a Tsukihime 2, it's rumored that the story will revolve around Enhance. Though, the author gets bored really easily so maybe take that with a (huge) grain of salt, yeah?

    Avenger. A member of the Twenty Seven Dead Apostle Ancestors. Number Eighteen.
    He was given the title Blade (Enhance Sword) by those despised him. A Vampire who recently joined the ranks of Ancestors.
    It was not unusual for Dead Apostles to wage wars against each other, and the purpose was to wrestle for power within the organization.
    Usually the subordinates fought for the right to inherit the title of an Ancestor. Fighting against the other Ancestors was almost unheard of.
    Enhance broke this rule, as he actively hunted for the other Ancestors.

    Phantasmal species.
    Within our works, this is a general term for those creatures that appear within legends and myths.
    They are those existences that deviate from their original form by the impact of factors alien to their ecology; those existences borne of human ideation (想念, sounen?); and those existences that ascend to a higher order as a consequence of longevity.
    Incidentally, it is typically only those creatures that hold standing as Demonic Beasts (魔獣, Majyuu?, translated sometimes as "Monstrous Beasts") or below that are used as Familiars (使い魔, Tsukai-Ma?). The Ranks go in the order of Animal (野獣, yajyuu?, lit. "wild beast") → Demonic Beast (魔獣?) → Phantasmal Beast (幻獣, genjyuu?) → Holy Beast (聖獣, Seijyuu?).
    Phantasmal and Holy Beasts of the Millennium Class (千年クラス, sennen kurasu?) fundamentally outmatch the strength of Mysteries (神秘, shinpi?) on the order of Magecraft; the Mysteries inherent to said creatures are of a magnitude equivalent to that represented within True Magic.

    Magical Beast [Others]
    In the world of Fate/stay night, a general term for beasts which do not correspond to normal ecosystems.
    They are divided into three ranks: monstrous, mythical, and divine.
    The vast majority of monstrous beasts are crossbreeds (chimera) living in still-uncivilized regions, but it seems that those of mythical rank and above have shifted to the far side of the world.
    Though the Pegasus that appears in the story is a monstrous beast, its long life puts it at the level of a mythical beast. Ordinary magi are completely unable to compete with something of this rank.
    Also, beings that take after dragons are considered to be superior, regardless of classification. Since dragons are endowed with the characteristics of several species, it appears that even consorting with humans was not uncommon.

    「Fate」世界における、通常の生態係に該当しない獣の総称。
    彼らにもランクがあり、魔獣、幻獣、神獣と分類される。
    魔獣の多くは掛け合わせ(キメラ)であり.いまだ未開の地に生息しているが、幻獣はその特性上、世界 の裏側にシフトしてしまったらしい。
    本編で登場するライダーの天馬は魔獣だが、長く蓄 えた年月により幻獣の域に達している。幻獣ランクのモノには、並大抵の魔術師では歯が立たない。

    Magical Beasts
    An umbrella term that encompasses all beasts that do not fall within the normal ecosystem. In this context, “beast” is a thaumaturgical term, and does not necessarily mean quadrupedal mammals. Magical Beasts cannot be explained by immature research or sudden mutations. They are true deviations from biology. Roughly Magical Beasts can be classified into Monstrous Beasts -> Phantasmal Beasts -> Divine Beasts in ascending order towards higher existence.
    Most Magical Beasts have existed since the Age of Gods, and are Chimeras formed from mixing different species. They live on currently undeveloped lands that cannot be reached by mankind. Furthermore, Phantasmal Beasts that have existed in the past have almost all migrated to a different world presented as the “Inside of the World”.
    Although classified as a Monstrous Beast, the Pegasus that Rider mounted in the story is an existence closer to that of a Phantasmal Beast due to surviving over a very long period of time. Also worth mentioning is that, Phantasmal Beasts that have survived over thousands of years are on the same tier as True Magic, thus rendering mysteries on the level of sorcery completely ineffective against them.

    The Pinnacle of Phantasmal Species – Dragons
    Dragons, or Magical Beasts similar to Dragons, have members in all classes of Magical Beasts (Monstrous, Phantasmal, and Divine Beasts). Dragons are always thought to be the greatest species within their corresponding classes. Because there are dragons of the Monstrous, Phantasmal, and Divine classes, they have been involved with mankind since before the Age of Gods. They have also left many legends in the field of thaumaturgy.

    Heroic Spirit with ranks in Monster and Magical Beast
    Because Rider’s true identity is Medusa, she is ranked as both Monster and Magical Beast. As a result, the rank of her Divinity is reduced to the lowest value of E-. In exchange, she possesses the skill Monstrous Strength, a trait of Monsters and Magical Beasts.

    Medusa
    Rider is more of a Divine Spirit than a Heroic Spirit. Yet, “Anti-Hero approaching Monster” is a more apt description than Divine Spirit. Because she is classified as a Monster, Medusa is poorly matched against Servants with legends of monster-slaying.

    Q: Asakami, Fujou, Ryougi, Nanaya are natural enemies of Half-Blood. Besides Nanaya, do the other three houses still hunt Half-Bloods?

    A: The other three houses have done so in the past. However, it is no longer necessary as time goes on. The cash cow... and the basis of the existence of the four houses ----- the enemy known as Half-Blood, have slowly morphed from an evil that threatens the society to a necessary evil.
    The Half-Bloods were no longer worshiped because the existence of the nation, so they compromised with the human society and became organized. They skillfully brought those in positions of power to their cause, and became the ones in power.
    As a result, the Four Demon Hunter Houses could no longer maintain themselves. Some became fallen, others reestablished themselves through other means.
    In the end, the only ones battling the Half-Bloods were the Nanayas. As to why, it was because that was all they were good at.
    The Ryougis and Fujous possessed other "useful" skills besides fighting Half-Bloods, so they focused on those areas instead and survived.
    The fall of Asakami was self-inflicted. They worshiped the captured Half-Bloods as guardian gods, and their lineage became diluted due to the continued interbreeding. In the end, they almost became Half-Bloods themselves. The mummy-hunter became the mummy, such is the tragedy of the Asakamis.

    Q:浅神、巫浄、両儀、七夜は混血の天敵だぞうですか、七夜以外の三家も混血狩りのようなことをしていたのでしょうか?

    A:ぞりゃ残り三家もしていましたとも。しかし時代が進むにつれ需要を失ったのです。四家の飯の種......もとい、敵である混血たちはいつの間にか社会悪から必要悪にシフトていました。
    国から天神地祇が失われ、混血たちは人間社会と折り合いをつける為に組織化し、巧みに権力者たちを取り込み、権力を使う側になっていったのです。
    そうなると退魔四家に居場所があるはずもない。あるものは没落、あるものは違う方法で家をもり立てていきました。最後まで混血退治を請け負っていたのは七夜だけ。なぜって、彼らには“それ”しか取り柄がなかったから。
    両儀や巫淨は、退魔の他にも“使い道のある”技があったのでそちらをメインにして生き残りました。
    浅神の衰退は自業自得。あれは捕まえた混血を家の守り神として飼育、ないし配合していくうちに血が薄れ、最後には自分たちもほとんど混血になっていた、というミイラ取りがミイラになったパターンです。

    Introduction - Four Great Demon Beasts

    Four Demon - The Great Beast.

    The familiars that serve as limbs for Merem Solomon, the Dead Apostle who is both one of the 27 Ancestors and the Burial Agency.

    It is said that each one is equal to a single Ancestor.

    Each one of the Four Great Demon Beasts is a Divine Beast class fantasy creature, but they were all creatures that Merem “literally” imagined.

    They don’t belong to any species on earth, but they pay homage to many organisms throughout the world.

    Boss-class monsters that obey the Dead Apostle Merem Solomon. The Demon of the Right Leg appeared in Talk. Well, it kind of got owned, but that’s because the Living Forest and the Whale Dog had just the worst compatibility.

    The fact that they don’t have names is because of the rule that “you can’t give demons a name so easily”. Merem wants to give them cool names, but it seems that if he did, they would become truly free, so he can’t.

    Explanation - Demon of the Left Hand

    Class: King of Rats

    User requirements: Manifestation of admiration towards others and the wish to transform.

    Design reference: His little friends living above the ceiling of the temple.

    The hero and idol of the rat world.

    A demon with absolutely zero fighting power, but the transformation ability to completely imitate the appearance of any human.

    In human society, he holds the status of priest. In the past, as the third most beautiful rat in the world, he has a lot of support among narrow communities living in narrow spaces like underground, above ceilings, in gutters, and behind furniture.

    “Left Hand” itself likes its priest self, and spends his days working relaxedly for Merem, humans and rats.

    “…That’s weird. Hey, did I design you to like humans?”

    “I will be an ally of humans as long as there is pizza.”

    Is a conversation this cheese lover has had with Merem.

    Also, every time the rats ask him,

    “Hey, hey, what part of you is a “Great” Demon Beast?”

    He apologetically tries to think of a response.

    Explanation 02 - Memorandum

    The representative of Merem, who can’t grow any older from his boy form. While he can transform into many types of people, he normally likes to take the form of a kind old priest.

    When faced with high-level exorcism, this appearance becomes undone and he reverts to his original form.

    Just a note so that you don’t misunderstand, but the power to transform into any human is a power of the “Left Hand” and not Merem. What Merem created was an existence able to freely change into a human, but the one actually execute that is the “Left Hand” only. Meremu himself wants to become an adult, and wants arms and legs, but he cannot himself transform.

    Again, although the Four Great Demon Beasts are basically Merem’s limbs, they are actually just providing him with limbs.

    If Merem disappears, the Demon Beasts won’t disappear until they are destroyed, but if they disappear, Merem will lose his limbs and have to reimagine them.

    To the Demon Beasts, Merem is their creator, but he is not someone absolutely necessary. But since they will be reimagined if they’re destroyed as long as Merem is still alive, they seem to hold some loyalty towards him.

    Explanation 03 - Demon of the Right Leg

    Class: King of the Earth

    User Wish: Manifestation of divine punishment and huge tsunami

    Design reference: The animal sculptures and stuffed animals decorating the temple, and also the temple itself

    The black dog of destruction. The bell of the end. The dog of gods. The whale dog.

    The demon of conquest and destruction that Merem prefers to drag along with him. It doesn't have any specific powers, but just having a huge body close to 200 meters in length is enough to qualify it as a "demon".

    Supposedly, Merem actually wanted a cuter dog, but it seems that his art skills are a little biased. The demon beasts that make up his "legs" do not act independently in a human fashion, but take action directly according to his orders. Perhaps it's because Merem loves dogs, but apparently his "Right Leg" listens to him more than the "Left Leg".

    Explanation 04 - Memorandum

    Just like other demons, the Four Great Demon Beasts are separate beings from Merem.

    Although they are demons conceived by Merem’s imagination, once he draws an image out it begins to walk away from him. While they listen to Merem, their creator, he cannot manipulate their ways or feelings.

    Basically, while humans can make as many revisions as they want when something is still in their head, once it’s put into form (ex: statue, drawing) and let into the world, it can no longer be changed.

    Indeed. The only things left in the author’s hands after he lets it into the world are the ownership rights.

    Explanation 05 - Demon of the Right Arm

    Class: Clever Daughter

    User wish: Manifestation of bayonets and war… is the official front for the manifestation of doll moe. Otherwise known as The Angel-Tricking Demon.

    Design reference: Goddess statue in the temple, funeral

    A huge, anthromorphized pile of trash, Sword-chan.

    A living gear statue around 10 meters tall.

    Among the four beasts, the only one actively undergoing model (fashion) changes. Fundamentally a downer-type, super-lazy goddess.

    Usually hides its face with a mask. Rarely takes it off. Also a mobile temple, with stairs and an entrance in the stomach region.

    As an idol, only possesses a minimum amount of intelligence, and is not very adaptable. As an example, it has around the computational power of a Family BASIC. A problem child that has trouble deleting commands after they’ve been given. Kind of like a printer that doesn’t stop printing even after the cancel button has been pressed!

    It’s a demon that symbolizes weaponry, but this is on principle limited to “weapons that it can possess”.  The design changes slightly to keep up with weapons development, but it settled on this model about 100 years ago.

    Explanation 06 - Memorandum

    The demon beast doesn’t appear much, maybe because Merem is being stingy. If we were talking Ultra Seven, it would be Windam. A character with few appearances despite its popularity.

    Going off topic, but in the initial planning phase we thought of it as a V2 rocket anthromorphism.

    Aim at the target and shoot, and with it transform into human shape and hack it to pieces. That was some kind of rocket-like intelligence mode we planned, but we thought that if it’s a demon then it should fully anthromorphize, so its acting style was changed. Also, keep it a secret, but personally I wanted to see Mr. PFALZ’s mech girl.

    Explanation 07 - Demon of the Right Leg

    Class: King of the Sky

    User wish: Manifestation of wandering and liberation. One who aims for the stars.

    Design references: The floor style in the temple. Talking with birds.

    An amalgamation of many different animals. The king of beasts that swims in the sky. A huge demon on the same scale as the “Right Leg”. Its tiled skin stores many different animals. Though it has aspects of a sky fortress, but perhaps because of the fate of those who fly, it will be destroyed if its wings touch the ground.

    The most beautiful of the demons that Merem imagined. The “Right Leg” specializes in annihilation warfare, but this one specializes in one-on-one combat against a super high-class enemy. …Well, generally it just deals critical injuries, then crashes and disperses.

    Merem treats it as a weapon with a too-high cost.

    Explanation 08 - Memorandum

    The Four Great Demon Beasts ---- treated by Merem Solomon as “odd entities” even among the 27 Ancestors, who pride themselves as being odd to begin with.

    It’s probably like having anime characters in elaborately drawn landscape paintings.

    While Reality Marbles repaint reality with one’s own imagined world, Merem’s Four Great Demon Beasts might be revenge against reality, from a fairy-tale world abandoned by the people.

    The Four Demons are the child called Merem’s doodles that have been given form. Therefore, when they appear, the landscape’s reality starts to crack.

    In order to demonstrate this unbalance, we requested their designs from someone with a completely different perspective, the gothic artist Mr. PFALZ.

    …The result goes without saying. The back of the giant beast that is “Right Leg” sinking in the city. The author definitely dreamed of this black prairie lined with lion statues, where the two protagonists clash. Screw that, I wanna write it.
