A list of the several Magecraft Systems, Magecraft Foundations and spells of note present in the World of Magecraft.

Alchemy[]

Main article: Alchemy

AlchemyWP (錬金術, Renkinjutsu?) is one of the Magecraft Systems, which focuses on the manipulation of the flow of matter.[1]

Anti-Beast Magecraft[]

Main article: Anti-Beast Magecraft

Magecraft that's ideal for hunting beasts and animals. It has degraded in the modern era due to advancements in hunting technology, but is still highly affective against users of Beastial Magecrafts such as Svin Glascheit's wolf magecraft and Roland Berzinsky's snake magecraft.[2]

Practitioner[]

Astromancy[]

Main article: Astromancy Magecraft

Astromancy Magecraft (天体魔術, Tentai Majutsu?, lit. AstrologyWP Magecraft) is a Magecraft System focusing around the celestial bodies.[3]

Beast Magecraft[]

Beast Magecraft (獣性魔術, Jūsei Majutsu?, also translated as Bestial Magecraft) is the name given to the field of magecraft that utilizes one's bestial nature.[4]

Beast magecraft was the sort of magecraft that changed the user. It wasn’t just the Magic Circuits that were altered, but the things that connected them as well, like nerves, muscles, or bones. What modern medicine could not transplant could also be affected, like skin, or even parts of the brain.[5]

While this magecraft eats at the minds of those of the Glascheit family, many other forms of it are more mild. For example, enhancing one's sense of smell to be like that of a dog, enhancing one’s legs to run as fast as a horse, or enhancing one's eyes to see in the dark like a cat.[4]

Magecraft that borrows the abilities of animals exists all over the world.[6] Possession by a fox or a dog god, famous in Japan, are also examples of this magecraft.[4]

Papilio Magia[]

Papilio Magia: Butterfly Magecraft (蝶魔術(パピリオ・マギア), Chō Majutsu(Papirio Magia)?) is the unique magecraft of the Caesarmund family, a spell designed to mimic the metamorphic process of a butterfly. Its premise is the inherent Mystery in the process of a butterfly changing to an effectively entirely different mode of life between the larval, pupal, and mature stages of its development. As Orlocke himself described it, it is “the manipulation of the gap between what is certain and what is uncertain,” interference in the act of transformation itself being the core of this strain of magecraft. Through this spell, Orlocke was able to gradually transfer his crest and his consciousness into a Homunculus body he had prepared which made from his own blood and semen. By the time of the Adra Castle incident, he had already transferred ninety percent of his being into the new body.[7]

It can also be used to infect the Magic Circuits of others with a Command Spell, as demontrated with Verner giving one of the Command Spell to the other members of the El-Melloi Classroom (with the exception of Yvette) while he holds the other two completely. As he is making the Command Spell invade the Magic Circuits of other people, the feedback he would receive from a betrayal would kill him.[8] As well as creating a Bounded Field which disperses a gale of wind from Gugalanna's stamp that moved at 50m/s into a gentle breeze.[9]

Black Magic[]

Main article: Black Magic

Black MagicWP (黒魔術, Kuro Majutsu?, Also translated as "Dark Arts" and "Black Magecraft"), is a Magecraft System that focuses on sacrifices.[10] They utilize Curses and things of that nature that would be considered "dark rituals".[11] Witchcraft is also part of this foundation and is used interchangably.[12][10][11] Some users also practice other "dark rituals" such as Summoning Demons or Magecraft similar to Necromancy to animate Ghouls.[13]

Code Cast[]

Main article: Code Cast

The prominent magecraft in the World of Fate/EX's future in 2030. It is a combination of science and magecraft that allows one to create Mystic Code's that can function in the Internet's Cyber Space and the Moon Cell's SE.RA.PH's space. It allows for magecraft to have a place in the future and the world where most magecraft can no longer function.

Curse Arts[]

Main article: Curses

Curse Arts (呪術, Jujutsu?) is a Magecraft System based around curses and hexes. The exact nature of curses vary widely based on the region and lineage, but in general they all function to bring misfortune and calamity.[14] Using the bare minimum of magical energy to produce the absolute maximum effect, wrenching open an otherwise guarded mind with mundane psychology, is said to be the fundamental technique of magecraft such as Curses, at least in Western Magecraft.[15]

Displacement Magecraft[]

Main article: Displacement Magecraft

Magecraft also known as Substitution. It replaces one thing with something else.

Domination Magecraft[]

Domination Magecraft (支配魔術, Shihai Majutsu?) is a school of magecraft that centers around "dominating" others. There are two known styles of this magecraft: Orthodox Domination, which can be used to dominate other people or objects, and a twisted form of this practiced by the lineage that Bazdilot Cordelion belongs to, centered around dominating oneself instead of others.[16]

Cashura used his Orthodox Domination in conjuction with Projection Magecraft to conjure and control a magical cord to bind Ayaka Sajyou.[17]

Bazdilot, thanks to his unique form of magecraft, is capable of controlling and manipulating the "mud of the Holy Grail" inside himself while maintaining his sanity, although this might also be due to him already being insane. He is also able to alter his own body through Domination Magecraft to gain super strength comparable to Reinforcement magecraft.[16] He can also use it to brainwash people, which he uses on some members of Clan Calatin, although Orlando Reeve speculates that, since his form of Domination magecraft is specifically only to use on himself, what he actually does is dominating and distorting the quality of his magical energy to be more easily perceived as Orlando by his subordinates, with some help from Francesca's illusions.[18]

Elemental Magecraft[]

Elemental Magecraft (五大元素魔術, Godai Genso Majutsu?)

Main article: Element

Formalcraft[]

Formalcraft: Magecraft Format (, ?) is a method to do magecraft using mana instead of od. A caster makes contact with Mysteries through processes established in ancient times such as sacrificing a chicken, or praying in a magic circle all night. Since magical energy comes from somewhere other than the caster, and they only need to perform the ritual(s), it is popular among magi who lack power because of weak bloodlines. Knowledge is a strong requirement.

Another Formalcraft: Elemental Conversion (, ?) allows for the conversion of Elements. A positive magecraft. One of its users, Ayaka Sajyou called it "Thaumaturgy for dummies." Elsa Saijou is good at it with Wind Element. Many talented Mages use it to compensate for lack of elemental affinity.

Elemental Conversion Practitioners[]

Flowing and Transferring of Power[]

Flowing and Transferring of Power (力の流動・転移, Chikara no Ryūdō・Ten'i?) spells are those that deal with the transference of energy or information from an object to another. Magical energy cannot be kept free-flowing outside of the body because it immediately disperses, so its only usage is normally to be used for spells before it disappears. Some can store their own magical energy, magical energy of others, and "other things" inside other objects, allowing them to be kept for later usage. For the Tohsaka family, jewels provide great storage efficiency for magical energy, while storing other things is more difficult.[19][20]

Jewel Magecraft[]

Main article: Jewel Magecraft

Jewel Magecraft (宝石魔術, Hōseki Majutsu?) is a Magecraft System based on using Jewels as stroage vessels for magical energy as they easily accumulate the thoughts of their owners.[21][22]

Reincarnation[]

ReincarnationWP (転生, Tensei?) is being reborn into another body while retaining characteristics of the past life, so far presented more along the same lines of Transference of Consciousness Magecraft, but in which the magus takes over the control of the body. Usually used when the target is still a baby, known examples are all imperfect since past traits are not fully retained. In this case what the magus is really doing is repeatedly recreating imperfect copies of himself, each copy potentially being far inferior and having no guarantee that the new child will have all the abilities as the original. To transfer one’s mind and soul completely onto a Familiar with a soul and take control of its body also falls within the domains of Reincarnation Magecraft.[23]

Michael Roa Valdamjong (Remake), attained this magecraft after he was turned into a Dead Apostle by Arcueid Brunestud (Remake), using a Principle he stole from her. Francesca Prelati was also noted to have developed a method of reincarnation that allowed her/him to repeatedly cheat death by reincarnating in new bodies every time he/she is killed, being either male like his original or female.

Shared Perception[]

Shared Perception (共有知覚, Kyōyū Chikaku?) is a spell that allows a magus to share the sensorial inputs (sight, hearing, etc.) of a creature that he has a pass of magical energy with (such as the one established in a contract between Master and Servant). Approval from the other party is a requirement. Uses include monitoring of target’s activities at distance and it is especially effective if said target is trained for scouting operations. Kirei Kotomine learned this from Tokiomi Tohsaka.[24]

Transference of Consciousness[]

The Transference of Consciousness (意識の転移, Ishiki no Ten'i?) is to transmit one’s consciousness into another object to acquire information from a different perspective. Widely used by magi on their Familiars or Puppets to remotely control them at a distance and as well as to perform spiritual possession of inanimate objects. If the target has their own soul and personality, the body control will remain with them. If the magus' own body is disturbed, the spell will be immediately canceled, and his consciousness will be forced back. Likewise, no matter how complete the transference is, once the body of the magus dies his consciousness will fade away with it. The Einzbern are particularly proficient with this magecraft.[23]

Golemancy[]

Golemancy is the practice of creating Golems, they have been produced since ancient times, such as through the Kabbalistic techniques of Avicebron. The concept of golems traces back to Ancient Israel, and the basics of their manufacture are said to have arisen sometime between the 2nd to 9th centuries. But their origins goes back even futher from a passage in Genesis that says “The Lord molded man out of the dust of the ground and breathed life into him through his nostrils”.[25]

Practitioners[]

Healing Magecraft[]

Healing Magecraft through a Scroll.

Healing Magecraft through a Scroll.

Healing Magecraft (治癒魔術, Chiyu Majutsu?) is the type of Thaumaturgy involving recovering the flesh of injured people and of detoxification. The Einzberns' one is used not for the sake of helping people, but rather to lessen the great burden felt by a subject who received an organ that was tempered with magical energy and help his body get used to the newly transplanted organ. Irisviel von Einzbern is proficient in this craft,[27] although she is also able to use simple healing spells by sending out her magical energy.[28][29]

Kirei Kotomine uses a cursing technique to heal the physical body by treating the spiritual one as a Spiritual Doctor (霊媒医師, Reibai Ishi?).[30] Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald also utilizes healing magecraft, allowing him to quickly attend to Lancer's wound without being close or leaving any trace.[31] Kijyo Koyo is well versed in healing magecraft.[32]

Holy Church[]

Sacraments[]

Main article: Sacraments

SacramentsWP (秘蹟, Hiseki?) is a Magecraft Foundation employed by the Holy Church. Its Magecraft Theory, the Church's Teachings and Holy Words (神の教え、聖言, Kami no Oshie, Seigen?), is the most widespread, powerful and well stabilized on the Planet Earth.[33][34][35]

Japanese Magecraft[]

Main article: Japanese Magecraft

Japanese Magecraft (日本の魔術, Nihon no Majutsu?) is the magecraft native to Japan. Like Western Magecraft, Japanese Magecraft requires Magic Circuits, but instead of sending magical energy into Spell Formulae or Magecraft Foundations it is used to draw the Authority of their contracted God,[36][37][38] [39]

Kashiwade[]

Main article: Kashiwade

Both Houjutsu and Onmyoudou are magecrafts that originated in Japan, but at the current point are considered separate from the main Japanese Magecraft. These systems are mainly derived from Chinese Magecrafts and operate with Yin and Yang Principles.

Houjutsu[]

Houjutsu (法術, Hōjutsu?) is used against Demons in Japan. It is the Japanese equivalent to Fangshi.[40] The relation with Ommyoudou in Nasuverse is unknown.

In Japan, there is a very secretive organization of Houjutsushi. Currently none of the monks of Ryuudou Temple are Houjutsushi, but there were a small number of them in the past. Souren Araya, the Myourenji family, and the Yakou family are also practitioners of Houjutsu.

Edict of Binding[]

Edict of Binding (禁縛の勅, Kimbaku no Mikotonori?), a spell that restrains non-humans, it is completely useless against Humans and Hybrids of humans with other creatures. This flaw led to formation of Demon Hunter Organization in Japan that used different methods in fighting Demon hybrids.[41]

Kongouyaku Shuku[]

Kongouyaku Shuku.

Kongouyaku Shuku (金剛訳・粛, Kongōyaku・Shuku?), usually simply called Shuku (粛, Shuku?), one of the spells that Souren Araya uses on the Ogawa Apartment. Crushing of an area of space after chanting an Aria of just one word followed by a clench of the fist. Touko Aozaki was surprised to find out about the existence of a magecraft capable of spatial interference that could be so easily actualized.

Taizouyaku Ten[]

Taizouyaku Ten (胎蔵訳・転, Taizōyaku Ten?) or Womb Realm of Reason, is one of the spells of Souren Araya, its powers is unknown.

Practitioners[]

Onmyoudou[]

OnmyoudouWP (陰陽道, Ommyō Dō?) is one of Thaumaturgical Systems that is predominant in Japan and a variant of the Chinese school of Thaumaturgy that uses the concept of yin and yang as foundation. It is derived from Feng shuiWP,[42] and based on China's Thought Magecraft.[43] A system that excels at divination, curses and the like, its most famous practitioner was Abe-no-Seimei. Practitioners are called Onmyouji.

Cornelius Alba says that a Japanese organization that uses this Thaumaturgical System has few connection with the Mage's Association, so the Association has difficulties to work in Japan.[44] In Fate/Apocrypha, some members of the Yggdmillennias are studying it.[45] Other practitioners of this Thaumaturgical System include Ashiya Douman, Murasaki Shikibu, and Kiichi Hougen.

Shikigami[]

ShikigamiWP (式神, Shikigami?), a symbol of power for the Onmyouji, are beings that are at the disposal of the practitioner similarly to the Western familiars. Creatures that share a spiritual connection with its master after receiving a part of their master, their powers are limited to a single-purpose curse and once the contract has been formed they will remain for as long as their master’s power does not run out.

As an aside, Shikigami Operation (式神行使, Shikigami Kōshi?) is Akiha Tohno's unique ability.[46]

Practitioners[]

Shugendō[]

Main article: Shugendō

Shugendō is a rare combination of Japanese magecraft and a religious sects teachings, and is predominately used by Japan's Tengu's their equivalent to the Chinesese Xian's Fangshi. Practitioners are called Shugenja.

Practitioners[]

Kabbalah[]

Main article: Kabbalah

Kabbalah is a widespread Magecraft Foundation and Magecraft System founded upon Judaism. It is one of the most famous lineages of Magecraft that the Orders of the Clock Tower were fundamentally based on.[47] The name of the Magecraft system was coined by Avicebron.[48]

Material Transmutation[]

Material Transmutation involves spells that interfere with the properties of an object. These include Strengthening and Gradation Air magecraft.

Gradation Air[]

Main article: Projection Magecraft

Projection (投影, Tōei?) magecraft, also called Gradation Air (グラデーション・エア, Guradēshon Ea?), is a practice involving the materialization of objects, in accordance to the caster’s imagination, through the use of magical energy. Gradation comes from the fact that the created object slowly fades away after being created, and Air is an allusion to the fact that said object is made out of "nothing".[49][50]

Alteration[]

Alteration (変化, Henka?) is the intermediary step between Projection and Reinforcement, to give an object a property or effect that it originally didn’t have. A master of Alteration can make drastic changes to substances such as turning metal into rubber, fire into ice, or concrete into mud.[51]

Alteration is the specialty of the Meluastea family. Karmaglyph Meluastea Deluc uses Alteration to apply various affects to arrows he fires from his crossbow, such as freezing, emitting lightning, corroding metal, and so on.[52]

Reinforcement[]

Main article: Reinforcement

Reinforcement (強化, Kyōka?, also translated as Strengthening) is the most difficult magecraft with the purpose of pushing a basis to the utmost limit. It is the foundation of all magecraft that enhance the existence of the target by pouring magical energy, but as no clear expression of how much it can be enhanced is defined, almighty reinforcements are rare.

Structural Grasping[]

Structural Grasping is magecraft that allows one to understand the structure and design of objects as if they were viewing a blueprint.

Mental Interference[]

Spells that cause some sort of effect on the target’s mind.

Memory Manipulation[]

Memory Manipulation (記憶操作, Kioku Sōsa?), an alteration of the mind’s records to make a person forget about a certain event, effectiveness is limited by the number of deviations between what the target remembers and what the people around them remember. A magus that has been discovered by normal people is expected to at least cast this on his witnesses. Waver Velvet used this spell to make Glen and Martha Mackenzie believe him to be their grandson for a long duration of time.[53]

Command[]

Command bends the target's will to the caster's. The subjugation lasts for success levels in rounds, but during that time the subject will do anything the caster wants as long as it does not contradict his basic nature. It can be cast and recast as necessary. Touko Aozaki used this spell on a criminal to learn what crime he had committed in the third Kara No Kyoukai film.[54]

Modern Magecraft[]

Main article: Modern Magecraft

Modern Magecraft (現代魔術, Gendai Majutsu?) is a classification of magecraft pertaining to a present day, broad overview of magecraft, contrasting the anachronistic views of older magus lineages. The study of it is Modern Magecraft Theory (現代魔術論, Gendai Majutsu-ron?), studied under the Clock Tower's Department of Modern Magecraft Theory and the California Convention.

The field of Modern Magecraft should not be confused with the term "modern magecraft" designating all of current Magecraft, which began when the Age of Gods ended.[55]

Chaos Magecraft[]

A practice of mixing various magecrafts, religions, science practices, and many others into a single style of magecraft that only combines the best of each for an optimal and powerful result. Because of this style Modern Magecraft is accused of being made up of thieves that steal only the magecrafts result without any of the history and importance of it. It does have a trade off, where because of it's mashed up nature it is also brittle from being made up of various parts and can easily be broken under many circumstances.

El-Melloi Classroom Magecraft (also known as Strange Magecraft)[]

Flat Escardos's version of Chaos Magecraft that he invented in the El-Melloi Classroom. It is unique to him, and only him. It allows him to create various original spells each with their own CPU's that remake themselves constantly to suit his needs.

Electrical Magecraft[]

Magecraft that enables one to manipulate electricity. Caules Forvedge has a knack for it, capable of launching electric attacks and using a replica of a Primeval Battery made by Flat to use the bioelectricity in a persons body to speed up their healing.

Internet Magecraft[]

Internet Magecraft (ネット魔術, Netto Majutsu?) refers to Modern magecraft utilizing the internet to facilitate it.[56]

Code Cast[]

Main article: Code Cast

Necromancy[]

Main article: Necromancy

NecromancyWP (死霊魔術(ネクロマンシー), Shiryō Majutsu(Nekuromanshī)?) is a Magecraft System that involves corpses. It falls under two other Magecraft Systems, Spiritual Evocation and Curses.[57][58]

Runes[]

Main article: Runes

RuneWP (ルーン, Rūn?) Magecraft is one of the Magecraft Systems that originated in Scandinavia. It was created by the Chief God Odin during the Age of Gods. They are symbols that, once inscribed, automatically realize Mysteries accordingly with the meaning that they represent. Composed of only straight lines and possessing mechanics similar to the Magic Crests,[59]

Shapeshifting[]

Shapeshifting (変化, Henge?) is the magecraft to change one's appearance. Depending on the technique, it is said to be a powerful curse or an old and advanced magecraft.[60]

Though Shapeshifting is possible with modern magecraft, most of it relies on illusions or techniques that transfer the user's senses to another medium, such as a doll.[61] But it comes down to two categories: a mind swap or a reconfiguration of the person's physical form. Swapping minds is easy, but the effects do not last very long, and the victim feels like they are dreaming. Changing someone's physical form is more tricky, involving reconstructing the base DNA sequence, and it is hard to revert back before the spell ends.[62]

Magecraft that recombines the body can be considered an endangered type of grand magecraft.[61] At the Clock Tower, Shapeshifting falls under the purview of the Department of Zoology.[60][63] Rune Magi can also shapeshift.[62]

Doctor Heartless uses Shapeshifting taught to him by Gurdoa Davenant to make himself pass as Caules Forvedge,[60] and Beryl Gut can shapeshift into whoever he eats.[64] It is also one of Ritsuka Suse's speciality with her Black Magic, even using it to change her appearance and stroll around the shopping street.[65] Alice Kuonji is apt at physical reconfiguration, having changed people who opposed her into dolls.[62]

Spiritual Evocation[]

Main article: Spiritual Evocation

Spiritual Evocation (降霊術, Kōrei Jutsu?) is a Magecraft System that focuses on summoning spiritual beings or performing spiritual possession.[66]

Time Manipulation[]

Emiya's Time Manipulation.

Emiya's Time Manipulation.

Time Manipulation (時間操作, Jikan Sōsa?) is the result of the Emiya family spending generations researching and seeking the magecraft that controls time. It is the ability to separate the passage of time inside a designated space from the "flow of time" in the outside world. It is classified as grand magecraft in the form of a Bounded Field that can be regarded as a type of Reality Marble in a way, but still not something extraordinarily difficult to utilize like other time related magecraft or something on the level of the True Magic that is unable to be replicated.

It allows for "time adjustment" that can only stagnate the time which has passed and accelerate time in the future rather than something more advanced like "time modification", which has the ability to reverse cause and effect and change the past. It is generally used with large scale rituals that require a large amount of magical energy and planning in order to activate it. Kiritsugu Emiya didn't continue this research due to it not being useful in combat, and instead took the knowledge left by his predecessors to create Innate Time Control. It limits the Bounded Field to his own body, so that it can be used at any time without expending large amounts of magical energy or requiring a ritual.[67][68] The Mage's Association has the majority of the Emiya family's Magic Crest, and the rest remained with Kiritsugu until his death due to not passing it on to Shirou Emiya.[69]

Thought Magecraft[]

Main article: Thought Magecraft

Thought Magecraft (思想魔術, Shisō Majutsu?, also translated as "Philosophy Magecraft" and "Ideological Magecraft"), also called FangshuWP (方術, Taoist Arts?) and Xian Arts (仙術, Senjutsu?), is the form of magecraft practiced across mainland continental Asia, from China to the Middle East. Thought Magecraft is heavily influenced by TaoismWP.[70]

While Thought Magecraft is just as wide and varied as Western Magecraft (西洋魔術, Seiyō Majutsu?),[71] the only things they share in common are the barest fundamentals and the use of Magic Circuits.[72]

Xian Arts[]

Spatial Transportation[]

Main article: Spatial Transportation

Spatial Transportation (空間転移, Kūkan Ten'i?) is magecraft in the realm of Magic.[73][74][75] Differing from Pure Spatial Transference (純粋な空間転移, Junsuina Kūkan Ten'i?), something requiring the use of Magic, it can be performed by anyone with enough skill. Although in the modern day teleportation is in the domain of Magic and as such impossible for normal magi to do, Ziz is a magus from the Wandering Sea and therefore from a different era, so it's just magecraft to him.[75]

Unnamed Spells[]

Unnamed Spells known to exist include:

  • Under duress, Sakura Matou can cast a spell using the Matou "absorption" nature magecraft, and it shoots like a spear, stabbing and entangling the part hit to drain the person of energy.[76]
  • A spell is cast on Zouken Matou's body and the Worms that form it. The spell causes deterioration of any strange body that harms it, dissolving it in a matter of moments.[77]
  • When summoned as Beryl Gut's Servant in the British Lostbelt, Morgan le Fay used a technique similar to Rayshift to send her knowledge and memories to her Lostbelt counterpart Aesc 2000 years ago in exchange for her life. Thanks to this, Aesc survived the fall of Orkney in the "first" Fairy Calendar. She then averted the Great Calamity, withered Seyfert, and established the Queen's Calendar.[78]

“Clock Tower”, the Highest Institute of Magic
The Clock Tower, the core of the Association and in fact what could also be said to be the Association itself, is based in the British museum of London. Magi from all over the world gather and devote themselves day and night to the study of magic, while at the same time, are busily tripping over and being tripped over by other factions and competing for power and budget. The organization is anything but harmonious and has a complicated bizarre structure, but the magical research there is without doubt the leading edge.

Below the building, there is the magi’s research area which includes studies and archives. It is only a venerable museum to normal people of course, but at the deepest part, there is a special area (prison?) called the “Bottom of the Bridge” where the Association confines many sealing designated magi deemed to be “dangerous because their talents were too outstanding.” Also, apparently the Gazamy the “Evil Spook”, treated as the number one disaster in the Association, is locked up at the bottom of the London tower.

The person of highest position in the Clock Tower, the “Director” has been the same person for the 2000 years since the founding of the organization, and because of this is thought to be something more than human.

The organization handling patents relating to magic is also the Clock Tower, and the current finances of the Tohsaka family is being by covered by the patent royalties that are being transferred to their account.

    Ranks of Magi
A magus is given a “rank” that matches his ability. The highest is said to be Crown (Grand), but details on it are unknown. Note that Lord El-melloi II, lecturer at the Clock Tower who has produced many Grands among his pupils, is stuck in the mediocre “fourth rank” for some reason.

    Color ranks
Separate from the normal ranks, color-based titles are given to those that have become special.
The highest are red, blue, and yellow based on the three primary colors. After that, there are the combined colors of orange, purple, green, black, and so on. The further down you go, the less your rank is. Note that there is no rule about only one person for each color. The Association will, without any stinginess, award a color to you if you’re a magus of great stature or one with an unusual talent.

    Sealing Designation Enforcers
If you receive a “sealing designation”, you will be confined and even your magic research will be gone, not to mention your freedom. Thus, the person given that designation will of course desperately resist that and won’t stop fighting. To forcefully retrieve magi who were qualified enough to be given a sealing designation, the Association dispatches “Enforcers.” There are around 30 of them total, and Bazett is one of them.

Lords, consuming their time in power struggles
In the Magic Association, no rather, the Clock Tower, there are a number of families that hold sway. They are called Lords and are the objects of fear. There are three major families of Lords and about 20 families of relatives. These families are well-known even in normal society. The history of one family is at shortest 500 years and the longest is over 2000 years. They have been plotting and plotting since a staggeringly long past.

The Sea of Estray, together with the Atlas Institute, is an organization called the original form of the Magic Association.
Among the founders of the Magic Association, there had been many heretical magi who were exiled from the Sea of Estray and the Atlas Institute and had no place left to go.
The base of the Sea of Estray is in Northern Europe. This base, with the nickname of the Moving Stone Coffin, is itself a moving mountain range. Normally it is wandering at sea as its name suggests, but sometimes it comes up on dry land.
It seems they research mainly body alteration, but the specifics are unknown.

    *What is an alchemist?
One who studies the flow of matter. That is what an alchemist is. The alchemists of the Clock Tower created products like the homunculi of the Einzbern by merging with western magery.
However, the ultimate goal of the alchemists of the Atlas Institute is set even closer to the original ideology, as the "transformation of events". The often spoke-up "transformation of base metal to gold" in alchemy is, to the members of the Atlas Institute, mere "transformation of matter" and is nothing more than a primitive art far removed from their ideals. Their alchemy is an advancement of the metallurgy of ancient Egypt, the root of the discipline, and has not been influenced by western magery like the alchemy that the Clock Tower magi handle.

    Bestial Magecraft [Magecraft]
The name given to the field of magecraft that utilizes one’s bestial nature.
While this magecraft eats at the minds of those of the Glascheit family, many other forms of it are more mild. For example, enhancing one’s sense of smell to be like that of a dog, enhancing one’s legs to run as fast as a horse, or enhancing one’s eyes to see in the dark like a cat.
Possession by a fox or a dog god, famous in Japan, are also examples of this magecraft.

Many believed that if it were not for Flat, he would be an entirely ordinary person, but with Gray’s arrival that illusion was put to rest. The incident that made the El-Melloi Classroom aware that their title of legendary pair extended to their weirdness was one month before the Adra incident.
Magecraft that borrows the abilities of animals exists all over the world, but the Glascheit family’s strain of magecraft is rather eccentric. It functions not by drawing out a powerful bestial nature, but by transforming oneself wholesale into an animal. Nerves, muscles, bones, and even the cerebrum are rebuilt in a process rivaling the theoretically extinct werewolves.
Speaking from the conclusion, rather than a magus, it would be more accurate to describe Svin Glascheit as a vessel for magecraft. That was why he became so captivated by Gray, who was similarly created to be a vessel for a past hero.
This is, in a certain sense, similar to Karabo, who was constantly being overtaken by the memories of others due to his Mystic Eyes. Having managed to overcome this unique facet of his nature, if Svin had come to meet Karabo at some point, perhaps he could have given him some advice.
Within the story, Svin acquired the rank of Pride. This is not just an acknowledgement of his personal abilities, but Svin himself, who was the crystallization of the Glascheit family’s research, was also taken into consideration. On top of that, having achieved the rank in his teens is a feat rarely seen in the Clock Tower, so it was understandable for El-Melloi II to be struck by such deep feelings on that occasion.

    Butterfly Magecraft(Papilio Magia) [Magecraft]
In this work, the magecraft used by Orlocke Caesermund.
That was why he was able to transplant his memory and personality into a homunculus made from his own blood and semen.
Having caught the eye of the master of the Castle of Separation Geryon Ashbourne, he enlisted Orlocke’s help, and was able to create a method for transplanting Magic Crests into others. …though as the story describes, it was far from complete, and came with heavy side effects (though those side effects were Geryon’s goal from the start).

    Jewel Magecraft [Magecraft]
The sorcery that Rin specializes in.
Jewels easily accumulate the thoughts of their owners, and make excellent vessels for magical energy.
Crystals that have slumbered beneath the earth for eons, in particular, are prone to having nature spirits form within them, and jewels with that property can be used as simple sorcery crests. For example, a jewel with a nature spirit of fire dwelling within it would become highly flammable just by passing magical energy through it… or something along those lines.
Whenever Rin has spare time she transfers her magical energy into jewels, turning them into powerful bullets. However, in the end they are merely disposable items.
Because their sorcery reduces expensive jewels to ash after a single use, the Tohsaka magi are fated to be chronically afflicted with a lack of funds.

    Golem [Others]
Artificial soldiers made of earth, stone or wood, which Avicebron manufactures. The concept of golems traces back to Ancient Israel, and the basics of their manufacture are said to have arisen sometime between the 2nd to 9th centuries. However, if you trace it back further, golems originate from a passage in Genesis that says “The Lord molded man out of the dust of the ground and breathed life into him through his nostrils”.
In other words, golems were originally an attempt to make “humans”. Therefore, their quality is considered higher the closer they are to being human. However, that is only the ideal golem in Kabbalist thinking, and regular magi might simply devote themselves on “how to make a strong golem”.
Avicebron’s magecraft is fundamentally specialized solely for the sake of making golems, and his techniques have already reached a level that modern magi cannot catch up to, letting him spend his whole life playing around while living off just the sales from his golems. It’s only natural that Roche idolizes him.
To make something close to human is the concept of Avicebron’s golems, but he’s willing to make completely different kinds of golems to amuse himself as well. The steel horse he made to act as Vlad III’s steed was a simple yet prided product of his, and even just the gems used for its eyes were worth hundreds of millions.
After the war, some of his golems actually managed to just barely survive, and though most of them were sold off, a few golems went to a new land with the homunculi.

    Baptismal Chant [Magecraft]
The only miracle allowed to be practiced by the Holy Church.
It was a simple ritual that sublimed lost souls through the Lord's teaching, and returned them to the appropriate "Throne".
The Foundations of each mage school's arcane principles were carved onto the World. Spells were activated by taking control of the Rules and System (through the Foundation).
Spells with a feeble belief system and small Foundation were often weak, and could not function in foreign lands.
Amongst faith-based spells, the one with the broadest Foundation was the Church's teaching of God, i.e. Words of God.
Its ability to interfere with physical objects was weak, but its ability to interfere with spiritual entities was great.
The teachings of the Church were widespread, because this miracle that "speaks to the soul" had mended the hearts of many.

  34. [v] Fate/complete material III: World Material - Theory of Magic - Magecraft: Land and Thaumaturgy, p.043

    Land and Thaumaturgy

    Magic Foundation Land

To use magic, a magus must first establish contact with a magical foundation engraved in the world, send a command to the foundation, and then execute a pre-constructed function. At this point, mystic energy fuels the execution of the function, so the magus must send the command and supply energy simultaneously.

Magic foundations are magical theories that schools of magic have engraved in the world, and magic is started up in accordance with those rules and systems. For example, the magical theory with the largest foundation is the “Teaching of the Lord” of the Holy Church. Magic foundations engraved in the form of academia and religions fuse intimately with the veins of the land, and the magus using that magic foundation can perform magic anywhere in the world. However, if the magus leaves the land where his magic foundation was engraved in, he loses the backup of his land, and the magic’s power is certain to deteriorate.

Additionally, this effect differs with magic foundations that are neither academia nor religion, but are instead exclusively inherited from person to person, such as in oral tradition or clan teachings. As long as the rules of those foundations are met, it is possible to exhibit the same basic effect irrespective of geographical location.

    Magical Foundation [Magecraft/Other]
A magical theory engraved into the world. Its strength is greatly influenced by the faith and the collective unconscious of the people.
As a Mystery propagates, it loses power. However, the reason they become more stable as knowledge about them spreads, though it may seem contradictory at first glance, is because of this system of Magical Foundations.
In the present day, the most widespread and most powerful Magical Foundation is the “Teachings of God,” used by the Holy Church.
Of course, there also exist families who develop magical formulas entirely independent of such Foundations, and weirdos like Flat who “build an entirely new formula from scratch every time.”

  36. [v] TYPE-MOON BOOKS material -The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II Glossary: Japanese Magecraft [Magecraft], p.024

    Japanese Magecraft [Magecraft]
In the magecraft used by the Clock Tower, the caster utilizes magecraft by first using their Magic Circuits to generate magical energy, then in most cases, connecting to magecraft foundations to lead them to spell formulae.
In contrast, Japanese magecraft shares the first step of using their Magic Circuits to generate magical energy, but from there they don’t go into magecraft foundations or spell formulae. Instead, it functions by drawing Authority from their respective contractors, the god worshipped in their organization (in most instances, only a part of it, such as a piece of flesh).
Consequently, the Clock Tower views their magecraft as a sham. After all, while what they do is minuscule in scope, it’s identical to magecraft from the Age of Gods—a completely backward process where they first use a god’s Authority to ensure a result, and then enlarge this result through a chant.
They exploit a god, but how real their faith in their god is varies wildly from person to person.
Incidentally, the idea of every member of the organization sharing a fragment of a god was inspired by the Thought Magecraft in the continent.

Officially called Preserved God Bodypart. Fragments of a god.
Those items had already appeared in other entries in several different forms, but The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II was the one that gave them main focus. They deteriorate if neglected, but if utilized correctly, they can enable Age of Gods’ magecraft, otherwise impossible in the modern era. However, it’s extremely difficult to operate a Divine Body from a completely different mythology from your ancestry. The main reason why the Clock Tower ignores the eight Divine Bodies allegedly still functional in Japan is that even if they did obtain them, the idea that they could adequately operate them is implausible.

    Projection [Magecraft]
    Gradation Air.
A sorcery that uses magical energy to materialize a mirror image of an object.
As Rin mentioned in the story, it's not very efficient.
That's because, if you're making a replica of something, rather than using projection it's easier and more practical just to gather the materials and build it yourself.
Normally, it is only used to project a substitute for an item that has already been lost, and for just a few minutes within one's own time axis.
At any rate, since Gradation Air is just supposed to be a short-term rental of the item's outward appearance, you can see why the version used by Shirou and Archer is completely ridiculous. It's no wonder that Rin wanted to kill him when she saw his shed.
Of course, Shirou can only project things that are related to weapons in some way – or more specifically, swords. Modern weapons are off limits.
Well, technically he can pull out shields or armor, too, if he strains himself to his utmost limits, but the effects only last for an instant and the cost is enormous.

  51. [v] TYPE-MOON BOOKS material -The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II Glossary: Karmaglyph [Person], p.023

    Karmaglyph [Person]
    Karmaglyph Melissa Deluc.
“Woah, woah, woah, I know that status-wise I’m the leader of the Neutral Faction, but I’m from the puny Eleventh Department. I cannot be compared to the previous El-Melloi.”
“Hey, El-Melloi II, don’t you think it’s unfair for you to monopolize all the fun of the adventure?”
    Lord Meluastea.
Has two attributes: Earth and Ether. He is the Lord of Archeology, and now also the Dean of Mineralogy.
The simplest way to describe him is as a Mage Indiana Jones capable of utilizing the treasures he collected.
He uses Shoot the Moon(Silver-corded Instant-arc), a mystic bow normally hidden in his suit. The mystic bow is capable of several different types of shots and can be used for excavation. Aside from its bow form, it can also morph into a hookshot wire or an emergency crane.
    He’s actually an Alteration pro.
His touch can effortlessly alter metal into rubber, fire into ice, concrete into mud. In addition to this ability, he also carries concealed in his person a diverse array of treasures he collected as the leader of the Meluastea. The sheer adaptability of this ability combined with his Mystic Codes is enough to place him among the Clock Tower’s top five.
He normally keeps this a secret but his true ability is to overclock his treasures.
    Its name is Phantasm Overload.
As someone who has no qualms about altering even his own magical energy with extreme delicacy, Karmaglyph can force a treasure to go beyond its capabilities. Naturally, the treasures burn to crisps more often than not, but until they do, they display power far superior to the Mysteries of the modern era—in some cases superior to their power in the Age of Gods. This couldn’t make for a more horrifying combination with how the Department of Archeology owns quite a few artifacts rivaling the Holy Ark. But obviously, as a lover of archeology, he rarely ever displays this ability.

During the events of The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II, he’s in his late 30s.
While the Meluasteas were famous for being quite the softies despite being Lords, Karmaglyph’s actions are quite ambitious. Money was always necessary for archeology, but come the 20th century, money suddenly became exponentially more needed by everyone. It’s due to this that he managed to steal the position of Dean of Mineralogy, but this also invited major distress.
Stealing a chair from the Aristocratic Faction put him on Barthomeloi’s watchlist.
The Meluasteas were the leaders of the Neutral Faction, but the Eleventh Department was always among the weakest. Their leadership status was symbolic and held together by tradition. Karmaglyph knew that and this was why he was so invested in solidifying his position.
Also, since the Department of Lore keeps exoanthropic artifacts under custody, they keep each other under constant surveillance. Lore is suspicious that Archeology is withholding artifacts belonging to their category, while Archeology wholeheartedly believes Lore is a hoax to monopolize a set range of artifacts. But despite everything, fieldwork often requires each other’s cooperation.
His interest in El-Melloi II is part political and part because he thinks their situations are similar. Because both lack genuine interest in Lord status and have another goal outside their goal in magecraft.
PS: A large sum of his debt is owed to Melvin’s mama.
His name is portmanteau of karma and hieroglyph.

    Necromancy magecraft [Others]
Necromancy magecraft. The style of magecraft that Shishigou Kairi uses.
Necromancy falls under the magecraft systems of both communicating with the dead and curses among the departments within the Association of Magi, and the term specifies all magecraft styles that primarily use and process corpses. Even after the soul has vanished, a magus’ body continues to have extremely potent magical properties, so the corpses of magi are more useful than regular corpses. Besides magi, corpses of things like beasts with magical properties are also highly valued by necromancers. For instance, a Phantasmal Species can be made into a suitably strong Mystic Code. Shishigou Kairi processes pieces of corpses such as these for every use he could. For example, he used things like monkey hands, owl eyes, and the hearts of magi.
Shishigou Kairi’s Mystic Codes were very high quality, and most of all were easy to use since the Mystic Codes that he made from corpses lacked negative factors such as “regret” and “malice” attached to them (while these increase a Mystic Code’s power, it proportionally raises the possibility of it going berserk). And those who should have fallen into ruin ended up becoming the subject of conversation among magi again—that includes the story of how Shishigou Kairi’s Magic Crest was turned poisonous, though.

Nasu's comment: A useless human with a peaceful heart, and the one among the Suse twin sisters to live a comfortable life. She originally came from a good family of the Church, but at an early stage she decided to switch sides to the Mages Association, and has been active as a double agent ever since. She herself doesn't have a favourite and thus doesn't care which one gets the upper hand. Based on her mood on that day, she changes her appearance and strolls around the shopping street. Actually, she is a resident of the apartment that Soujuurou used to rent. She is Yuika's older sister, but has none of the dignity that should come with such a role. She is expected by the staff to play the role of a "Kohaku-type woman" in the future or something.

Koyama's comment: Unbelievable, to think that she would become such a disappointing older sister type character...the oldest of the twin sisters. Well, at least she became a pleasant character. I will never forget her brilliant style in the bonus scenario. I wonder if this person also wears nun clothing. They are fraternal twins, so their appearance is different. Mainly in terms of style. Although, this person also has good style doesn't she?

    Innate Time Control [Magecraft]
Kiritsugu’s self-taught time-manipulation magecraft in which he creates a reality marble inside his body in order to manipulate time inside his body. It is Kiritsugu’s personal method of utilizing the Emiya family’s magecraft. He adapted the technique to make it suitable for combat. Time manipulation is typically a large scale thaumaturgical ritual, but by limiting the effects to within his own body, he can use it efficiently in small intervals. By accelerating or decelerating time within his body, he can perform actions otherwise impossible, however it takes a severe toll on his body.

    Philosophy Magecraft
For the Clock Tower in the Occident, there is the Luo-Xuan Guan in the Orient. Philosophy Magecraft is the main magecraft employed by this Luo-Xuan Guan, spread from Asia to the Middle East.
Unlike the Clock Tower's Western Magecraft, this one doesn't employ Magecraft Foundations. Instead, it's utilized by connection to a giant Greater Mystic Code fused with planet Earth, the Philosophy Foundation - sort of a pseudo-Root.
The currently distributed Philosophy Keys enable access to restricted territories of this Philosophy Foundation.
Philosophy Keys are passed down from teacher to student, and inheriting a Philosophy Key essentially means shouldering a part of the world.
It's worth special mention that the Philosophy Key leading back to the founders are said to enable connection the Privileged Domains.

  73. [v] Fate/complete material III: World material - Theory of Magic - Magecraft: Effects on the Level of True Magic, p.049

Effects on the Level of True Magic
Although generally speaking “there are five True Magics”, this number does not reflect “effects that rival True Magics”. There are several examples in the story. Many Mystic Codes and creatures that exist in the world are also “shaped through True Magic”. Finally, there are those without definite shapes, but only exist “in motion”.
A representative example of this last category is Assassin Kojiro Sasaki’s secret sword technique “Tsubame Gaeshi”. It is an ultimate technique which consists of the blade absolutely, simultaneously tracing separate paths and severing the target. In thaumaturgy, this is called “Multidimensional Refraction Phenomenon – Kischua Zelretch”, in other words, a limited application of the Second Magic “Operation of Parallel Worlds”.
In addition, reality marbles, the sorcery that overwrites reality with the caster’s internal landscape, is also thought to be a skill that approaches the miracle of True Magic. Although temporary, there are not too many magi who are able to execute this World-altering grand sorcery.

    •Avalon: The Everdistant Utopia
The matching “scabbard” of the holy sword Excalibur. The wielder does not age, and injuries will also quickly heal.
After invoking its true name, Avalon dissipates as tiny particles into the air, and shields the wielder from all interference. No damage can be done to the wielder when a state of absolute defence is initiated. Even interference from the parallel world based on the Second Magic will be blocked. An “absolute defence” that can even repel the assault of True Magic, it is a True Magic in itself. No one can harm the tranquil King that stands in the land of Avalon.
When Avalon was unleashed, not even the King of Heroes could harm Sabre.

•Caster’s Sorcery (limited to Ryudo Temple)
In the ancient era, sorcery is synonymous to True Magic, thus magi are Magicians. The true identity of the Caster in the Fifth War is Medea. She is one of these sorceresses that lived in the Age of Gods. Therefore, the sorceries which she executes have powers that approach the realm of True Magic. No matter how large-scale the sorcery is, she can use ‘High Speed Divine Language” to cast it in one step. Her skills even transcend the strongest magi of the current era, exceeding the Magicians. Although Medea is not a Magician, no one can argue that she is “a magus that is infinitely close to the Magicians”.

•Phantasmal Species (Phantasmal Beasts of the Millennium-Rank, and Divine Beasts)
The creatures told in the myths and legends around the world. Dragons, Fairies, and Ghosts etc. are such examples. The Pegasus mounted by Rider is a member of the Phantasmal Species.
Phantasmal Species embody mysteries simply by existing, thus they transcend normal sorceries. Those Phantasmal Species that have survived for millennia are thought to be equal to True Magic, even observing one can be said to be a miracle.

    •The Spatial Transportation of Servants
Spatial Transportation is a sorcery in the realm of True Magic. Not used normally, but Masters can use command spells to realise it to a limited extend. This is called Forced Summoning. Although the distance may be quite far, after the command is issued, the Servant will traverse great distances and arrive at the side of the Master in haste.

    •Zelretch’s Treasure Chest
The heirloom of the Tohsaka House, and now it is a mystery chest that Rin favours. It was made by Zelretch.
It looks like a “genuine treasure chest” from the outside, but it is really a “magical chest” that was made by applying the Second Magic. By bending space, most items can be fit into it. Possibly due to the effect of the Second Magic, the rate of temporal passage inside the chest is different from that of the outside. One hour inside equals to one day outside.
